How often is 'just a cold' actually covid?

lookingformyleopard · 29/01/2021 17:48

My mil is absolutely adamant that she only has a cold. She's snotty and has a headache, but she hasn't been out for a week. I've never heard of a cold with a 7 day incubation period.
I'm not imagining reading that loads of people have been snotty and turned out to be positive for covid?

My MIL was adamant it was only a cold... tested positive. I don't see the harm in getting a test to be sure?

SunbathingDragon · 29/01/2021 17:53

More likely to be a cold than covid with a snotty nose. Any other symptoms?

ThatDamnKrampus · 29/01/2021 17:57

Dd snotty and sneezing - vivid positive. Lost sense of smell after test!

Pinkbubbles12 · 29/01/2021 18:03

Everyone i know that has had covid (apart from asymptomatic ones) all started with a cold

VinceNoirsShinyBoots · 29/01/2021 18:05

Still plenty of coughs and colds about.

Dottydoodoo · 29/01/2021 18:06

I thought I had a cold, was all blocked up and snotty. I tested positive and like the previous poster my taste and smell went off a couple of days after the test!

sausagepastapot · 29/01/2021 18:11

My brother and parents all had a 'cold', tested positive a week later. None of the classic symptoms either.

SimonJT · 29/01/2021 18:12

It would be interesting.

My son tested positive on Tuesday, cough and a temperature that lasted just over 24 hours.

I then got awful muscle aches, very bad cough, temperature, no taste/smell, bad stomach, fatigue, breathlessness when I do anything that isn’t sitting/laying down. My blood sugars are also absolutely all over the place and hard to control at the moment. I’m meant to be having my vaccine on Tuesday, so its fantastic timing.

My partner had a snotty nose, sore throat and the feeling of mildly blocked sinuses. His symptoms lasted two days and aren’t actually on the three symptoms when booking a test.

We both got our positive result today.

Aimee1987 · 29/01/2021 18:13

The 3 main symptoms dont cover a huge amount of the symptoms.

www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/symptoms.html

This is the Irish version of the NHS coronovirus page and they list the main 3 and then the multiple other ones including a stuffy nose.
The CDC one looks more like the Irish one with a whole host of symptoms.

I think the reason there is so much asymptomatic spread in this country is that the definition of symtoms is too narrow

lookingformyleopard · 29/01/2021 18:19

She's refusing to get a test because she's convinced it can't be covid.
When we spoke on the phone she was coughing too but also claims not to have a cough...

My whole household of four have got an awful cold. None of us have been anywhere near another person for two weeks. We all tested negative for covid

mangothoughts · 29/01/2021 18:22

So many "colds" are actually covid, people are either ignorant or don't want to admit they could have covid and would need to self isolate. A friend on Facebook was moaning about how awful she was feeling and saying "don't worry people it's just a cold" a week later she is eventually persuaded to take a test and big surprise it's covid. In the meantime she was going out to the shop, seeing friends etc I think there is an awful lot of this around.

Sorrytodisturbyou0 · 29/01/2021 18:29

I think a lot of this is down to the fact the NHS are still stating the only 3 symptoms are fever, persistent cough and loss of taste/smell! If you don’t have any of those symptoms you effectively have to lie to get a test!

MiniTheMinx · 29/01/2021 18:30

I tested positive Monday with very mild cold symptoms. I was stuffed up, sneezing, and had a mild headache. I tested Monday because my weekly test taken on Thursday for work had not returned any result. I can not work with cold symptoms because it would be irresponsible when I know lots of people are testing positive with cold symptoms. I'm fine, and hopefully will continue to be ok. I'm so relieved I decided to book a test because otherwise I could have passed this on.

I would question how many people are truly completely asymptomatic rather than just positive without the three main symptoms.

Figgyboa · 29/01/2021 18:40

My covid symptoms presented as a cold, a very bad head cold. I have none of the other symptoms

RaininSummer · 29/01/2021 18:44

I am working from home and only doing click and collect yet I seem to have had three snuffly colds this winter. Each time I have had a negative Covid test. Not to say that will always be the case but I seem to just get colds out of nowhere.

Porcupineintherough · 29/01/2021 18:44

Ds1 had a cold (sneezing, sore throat, blocked nose) in December. We found out what it actually was when he infected me and I got a cough with it. Hmm

dingoesatemybaby · 29/01/2021 18:46

I am just recovering from covid (I say recovering, I still feel awful), I got my positive test a week ago today. I had a temp and a slight cough. The cough was never actually that bad, not the way it's portrayed to be anyway and the temp lasted one day. The worst symptom has been the sinus headaches which have been relentless. Also exhaustion. Lost smell/taste about 4 days in but it's coming back now.

There are such a variety of symptoms, I really don't know why they focus on those 'main 3' when they were pretty minor symptoms for me. The others were much worse.

PuppyMonkey · 29/01/2021 18:49

DP had it in the first wave (confirmed via a random antibody test) and his main symptom was a terribly snotty nose which lasted over a week. He never got a cough, had a mild temperature for about half a day but then it was normal.

Clarabellawilliamson · 29/01/2021 18:50

She doesn't have to get a test..... but I think everyone would prefer it if she didn't leave the house for 2 weeks just in case!!!

My son (age 2 ) has a cold, and a cough, but has tested negative so there ARE still non Covid illnesses around.

Flev · 29/01/2021 18:52

My toddler started a cold on Monday, then developed a temperature on Wednesday so we got her tested. She's negative, so it is just a cold. She's been off nursery all week though as they don't need to be dealing with a runny-nosed miserable mess!

yuyubooboo · 29/01/2021 18:53

I had covid with cold symptoms. The whole family subsequently had cold symptoms ...and we are all unsurprisingly positive.

Bizawit · 29/01/2021 18:53

My friend thought she just had a cold. A few days later she lost her sense of taste and smell so took a test “just in case”. She had covid.

lookingformyleopard · 29/01/2021 19:09

Thankfully she's been isolating anyway because she was supposed to be going to look after my nephew next week. Hopefully she'll be convinced to get tested before then.

Seems a bit crazy that so much emphasis is on only 3 symptoms when it seems so variable 🤷‍♀️
