Teaching a child to read off your phone is rubbish!

My ds has to read daily and today we gave it a go. We sat together with my phone in my hand and opened up the ebook.

Ds started enthusiastically, then my phone zoomed in and wouldn't zoom back out until I turned it on and off.
We loaded it back up read a few pages then the same thing happened.

Poor ds sat staring at my small screen trying to read the words all the while a bright light was glaring back at him.

Yes I know my phone is crap,
I know we could read a proper book but the teacher specifically wants them to read this book,
I know it's making the best of a bad situation,

But it's still rubbish!

How old is he and why that book?

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 29/01/2021 16:27

Might not help with that book bit Reading Chest subscription is really good

RosesAndLemonade · 29/01/2021 16:28

As a teacher, I would say any "real" book is great. Find something at home at the same sort of level that you DS would enjoy. Share it with him, help him with the words he get stuck with and talk about the story together

It doesn't "have" to be that book. The teacher would like it to be that book yes, but in reality the important thing is that kids enjoy reading. If they enjoy then they are keen to learn.

Share a book, fuck the phone off, books aren't meant to be shared with children on phones.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2021 16:28

Perhaps it's the ebook app you have which is at fault? I have a couple of different ones on mine and they don't do that.

Maybe have a look in the settings to see if there's something that can be changed?

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 29/01/2021 16:29

I'd just say fuck it. Teacher wants him to read that particular book then she can supply it in paperback form or wait until the libraries reopen. Assuming he is young and learning to read I'd just pick another book for now. If it has words, all spelled correctly and he is reading them, what's the problem?

Bunnybigears · 29/01/2021 16:29

Which book is it? I bet if you asked around on Facebook someone would have a copy. I know some local businesses round here are offering to print things for free for kids who are learning at home. Or just buy the book.

Irre247 · 29/01/2021 16:33

Might be worth asking the school if they have a spare iPad/chrome book or similar you could borrow.

davidsSchitt · 29/01/2021 16:34

Have you asked for a printed copy?

ZaZathecat · 29/01/2021 16:37

Just read any book with him. All reading is good, even comics. I'm sure the teacher would just be pleased your making an effort, especially if you tell them about the frustration of using a phone.

minniemango · 29/01/2021 16:39

Just let the teacher know that the ebook doesn't work on your phone, she won't mind.

Maybe see if your local library has some early reader books instead?

eeliie · 29/01/2021 16:39

It's a level 1 book. Very basic. The book itself is perfect for him to feel like he's reading a book himself. We don't have books like that at home.

I remember sitting with dd and really enjoying reading with her. Ds really wants to read and the phone is ruining it. I actually have a migraine now from doing it.

See if you can get the "teach your monster to read" app instead

minniemango · 29/01/2021 16:46

I bought a set like this www.books4people.co.uk/products/roderick-hunt-and-alex-brych-biff-chip-and-kipper-s1-24bks?_pos=2&_sid=1a1c880c1&_ss=r
when mine were learning to read.

Bunnybigears · 29/01/2021 16:46

If it doesn't have lots of words, which it sounds like I would just be tempted to write it out for him to read, or type it if your handwriting is as bad as mine Grin

ElliFAntspoo · 29/01/2021 16:53

How many people have real books in their hone? How many people read real books with their kids? Our local library has been closed not for 10 months. We're stuck with the books we got out last March.

Unsure33 · 29/01/2021 17:15

Can’t you go on local Facebook page to see if anyone has an old kindle or something similar you can have .?

BertieBotts · 29/01/2021 17:24

We moved abroad when DS1 was just 5 and I used this set with him which was absolutely brilliant.

Appreciate you might not be in a position to / want to buy books but in case you do, I would really recommend this set.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2021 17:25

Also not a bad idea to ask on local FB selling group if anyone has old level 1 learning to read books lying around at home.

Mol1628 · 29/01/2021 17:29

I don’t read the set books with my youngest. He hates reading from a screen.
Just explain to the teacher.

Brunt0n · 29/01/2021 17:33

Do people really not have books in their homes? People with children?
Hailtomyteeth · 29/01/2021 17:37

My dgd is 9. She had 250 books before she was born. She reads daily with her parents.
Real people do have real books at home and they really read them.

BertieBotts · 29/01/2021 17:41

Yes, lots of people don't have books at home Confused This is hardly new.

I would guess the majority of people have at least some, but there have always been families who don't for whatever reason have books.

Ariela · 29/01/2021 17:42

Our local library you can order 10 books online, and go collect which is fabulous. Do checkout what your library offers.
I'd also ask online on a local FB page ' has anyone got (name of book) or similar level one books they have finished with ' Quite sure there will be people looking to offload old books, just the same as I was recently looking to offload GCSE and A level books. Or order a selection online from eg www.books4people.co.uk/collections/toddlers-books-3-5 or secondhand from Abebooks

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 29/01/2021 17:42

Op can you look at ebay and amazon for similar level 1 books?.
Also local seller on fb.

As pp suggested we signed up to reading chest, 3 different levels of payment depending how quickly you want yo swop the books. They carry most reading schemes so last march we joined it, gold and get 6 books a week and we can send back and get more.
We followed our school reading scheme however, if dd read all those books or becomes interested in a topic you can browse any scheme and choose those books... It's flexible and has been utterly fantastic for us.

They send out certificates when the child reads certain amount of books.

For his age I would hope for the cheapest tier.
