Just wondering what my options are, so if people say this isn’t allowed I won’t do it.
Our roof has started to leak, hoping for work to be started soon. I have a baby and child, all my family live 200 miles away, if we (me and 2DC) isolate (and also the family I am going to stay with) for ten days before, can I travel to stay with them while work is done? We wouldn’t stop on the way (breast feeding, can use car shelf as a changing table if needed). We are getting click and collect orders every 8-10 days anyway and not seeing anyone.

Or should we stay in the house, try and home school in the cold/noise.
Thanks

Err... If your house is not habitable, you have to go and live somewhere else. Why wouldn't that be allowed?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 29/01/2021 13:48

Won’t most of the work be outdoors anyway? I wouldn’t drive 200 miles unless serious damage and not liveable in.

ProfessorInkling · 29/01/2021 13:49

Of course.

minipie · 29/01/2021 13:50

How long will the work take?

If a couple of days then seems like overkill.
If a couple of weeks then sensible.

SendMeHome · 29/01/2021 13:50

It’ll depend if your house is habitable, legally, I believe.

Is there no one closer than 200 miles away? I’d have said to go for it if everyone is being careful, but 200 miles is a long way...

Honeydukesmum · 29/01/2021 13:50

Is baby under 1 .. you can bubble then if other party or yourselves not already has a bubble.

atomt · 29/01/2021 13:51

I guess it depends on how much work the roof needs but simple repairs are usually done in a day or two. Even in non-covid times it's never made my home uninhabitable.

davidsSchitt · 29/01/2021 13:53

"Is baby under 1 .. you can bubble then if other party or yourselves not already has a bubble."

If the baby was under 1 on 2nd December 2020 you can. Not just if they are 1 now

davidsSchitt · 29/01/2021 13:54

But how bad can a leaky roof be? It'll not take long to sort

LucilleTheVampireBat · 29/01/2021 13:59

so if people say this isn’t allowed I won’t do it

In the nicest possible way, OP, the people on here don't get to tell you what is or isn't allowed (as much as they like to think they do). They make up their own rules! Lets all remember the 'cheese in coffee' debacle of March 2020

Of course you can go live somewhere else rather than live with a leaky draughty roof in winter with small children. Just go. We don't live in a police state just yet.

davidsSchitt · 29/01/2021 14:02

"Of course you can go live somewhere else rather than live with a leaky draughty roof in winter with small children. Just go. We don't live in a police state just yet."

The op is suggesting isolating first....the roof will be fixed by the time that's done with

Iheardit · 29/01/2021 14:03

Thanks everyone, baby is 4 months I think work will be taking 1-2 weeks depending on the weather. I do have friends locally but they are NHS workers, also have one other family close by, but with a very vulnerable family member so would rather not risk it (even though we would take all precautions).

What I am worried about is the house will legally be habitable I guess, and if just me would be fine, but with a baby I have a higher level of habitable I guess.

The work will hopefully be starting in 2 ish weeks, so can easily isolate before then, I can do a food shop today for two weeks so I can just isolate from today (not that we are seeing anyone). We love very rural so even with daily exercise we don’t see anyone.

The leaky roof is not the only issue, it’s a leaky Victorian house with issues with the chimney pointing, rotting joists and unsuitable mortar around the windows.

It’s fine why do you even need to ask for validation from strangers online? Just use common sense and do what’s best for your family. My parents moved in with us in the last lockdown for 2 weeks as they had to have urgent work done on their house they live 100 miles away.

DownWhichOfLate · 29/01/2021 14:45

Go! The people saying they wouldn’t probably haven’t had to live amongst building work with two young children!

IndecentFeminist · 29/01/2021 14:52

I would. We are moving out tomorrow as we are having building work done, we have managed since October but it will soon be unsustainable.

Not 200 miles though as need to stay local for work.

Mousehole10 · 29/01/2021 15:03

Are you already in a support bubble? If not then legally you can form one with a household anyway as you have a baby under one, then you can go and stay with them any time you want.

MaryShelley1818 · 29/01/2021 15:39

Well I wouldn't move out unless it was actually uninhabitable.

We've just completed 8wks solid of renovations. I'm 9mths pregnant (being induced on Sunday) have a toddler at home, me and DH were both wfh and I was studying for my degree too. (I'm not trying to imply I'm superwoman - just that it's not that bad and you do manage).
We had no floors and walls at points, no boiler, I peed in a bucket lol. 5 builders in every day, but actually just got used to it. The work on the roof we didn't even notice them do as it's a large Edwardian house so far enough away. It was dusty and dirty and inconvenient but strange how quickly we got used to it.

Pootles34 · 29/01/2021 15:45

As others have said, you can form a bubble with one other household if you haven't already done so as you have a child under 1.

Poppystars · 29/01/2021 15:48

Yes due to a young baby....

negomi90 · 29/01/2021 15:52

Go, but if you don't want to go far and have the money, then hotels are still open and you could do stay at home and go last minute to a local hotel as and when you need.
