To take dc for routine dental check up?

I am wondering if it is wise to do so at the moment? They haven't been to the dentist in over a year and so this would be a routine check up. They have no problems as far as I know. However, not sure, if it ought to just wait. DC are 4 and 8.

Yes, it’s fine.

Yep, took my 9 and 5 year olds a couple of weeks ago. All very normal and glad we did.

Yes, I would take them OP. Took my DS for a routine check up in October as he had one cancelled in the first lockdown, and I've had to have a root canal since too. Felt very safe, I wouldn't give it a second thought to go again.

I had a checkup and scale and polish last month - it felt very safe, and I am glad I went. Having to stand and wait in the cold outside was a bit of a pain though!

I was a bit surprised to get a call from our practice this morning asking if I wanted to book in for a routine hygienist appointment. That really can’t be a priority (I’ve never had issues with this), so I said I’d wait until my check up is due. It’s weird they are all so different Confused.

I wouldn’t go just for a check up. I’m 99% sure that I caught Covid at my sons dental appointment last week - ‘Covid safe’, I think not. Now I’m in isolation with 4dc and just waiting for them to catch it one at a time. I wouldn’t risk it.

PracticingPerson · 09/02/2021 23:21

I decided I think I am taking them to the dentist but skipping the hygienist.

I was put off as last time I went to the hygienist her mask wearing was half hearted (before she changed into the full darth vadar suit).

I'm more worried about how the fuck we ever see the orthodontist again...

I’ve had 3 broken teeth in lockdown so that’s been 6 visits
All perfectly safe

My 4 dc had their check ups recently. It was incredibly well organised, temp checks on the door, then straight over to wash hands and sanitise. No waiting room, just straight in to the dentists room. One way system operating so in one door and then out the other! All staff in PPE and everything incredibly clean. My older ones went in on their own and I went in with my youngest. It felt incredibly safe.

I also had the joy of having root canal, in two hour long appointments, that was completed just last week. Again, I had no concerns at all and just very grateful that my dentist is still open and carrying out all their routine work. I can't imagine what state my infected tooth would have been in if it had been left much longer!

Ours just told us they are only allowed to do emergencies- what are the rules? None of us have been for 18 months

Frazzled2207 · 10/02/2021 08:44

Mine won’t see anyone other than dire emergencies. Seems very unfair.

Dentists are allowed to open as normal during this lockdown because they have had time to adjust their approach to a Covid-secure one. I’m not sure how it varies between dental practices, however, in terms of what they are happy to do. To still refuse to deal with anything but emergencies at this stage seems pretty poor to me though.

Yes, definitely go. I've had dental treatment throughout the past year (needed two root canals caused by grinding my teeth with stress!) and it's been fine and I took our DD last week because a back milk tooth that's coming out has cracked. Dentist gave her a full check up, her first in over a year, and I'm glad she did because she has some plaque build-up that could cause issues, plus they've now referred her for braces.

But even though ours was an emergency, our dentist (NHS) is now accepting routine appts for children because they are seeing massive issues in young patients, like multiple cavities and the need for surgical extraction. So if you have an appt for your DC, go!

Chocolateandamaretto · 10/02/2021 09:55

We went last week, oldest DD desperately needed an orthodontist referral and dentist agreed so I’m glad we did it. They’re very stringent and hygienic and I was very impressed. They had to do my scale with manual tools though (I think sonic sends too much stuff flying about?) which was fairly unpleasant but apart from that and the masks it was pretty normal. A fun trip out for the kids lol.
