Does anyone in the North worry we’ll miss out again?

I’m in West Yorkshire and have had restrictions since the last lockdown, except for about 3 weeks around June/July time when we could mix inside households briefly.

When London’s numbers started going up, they were still in tier 2 and we were put into tier 3 again. Just before Christmas when London and the south east were rocketing again, we had some of the lowest numbers we’d had in a while. Now the new variant is here, our cases were rising a little again, they are falling now, but not as substantially as the south, because we are a lag behind again.
I’m really worried that we’ll come out of lockdown and back into there and we’ll be back into a higher tier again, my family lives in the south east, so due to this mismatch of tiers between us, we haven’t been able to travel and see each other since summer.
I know it’s just the way things are, but I feel sad because even when our cases were finally dropping we were obviously restricted because of the new variant that was found in the south east.

Hopefully it won’t turn out like that though and it’s just me being pessimistic and anxious!

Yes, I worry it's possible. The decisions seem to be led by London and the South East with little regard for the North. Like you say, we were left to languish in Tier 3 when our cases were far lower than London which was in Tier 2.

I'm in the same position with my parents down South and we haven't seen each other since the summer Sad.

Fiadh79 · 28/01/2021 17:26

Yes. Apart from the tier 4 thing over Christmas, it seems like if numbers are high anywhere in the north they do local lockdowns, numbers high in London they lockdown the whole country. It is frustrating.

Bettyboop89 · 28/01/2021 17:35

@Fiadh79 I completely agree!

@LApprentiSorcier it might come to a point in that we may break the guidelines once we’re in tiers and travel to see my parents anyway, depending how things are then.

Also worried about this too. They do love to shaft the north 😑

PotteringAlong · 28/01/2021 17:45

I’m utterly convinced it will happen. My mum’s 70 at Easter. I’m betting that she and my sister and her family (south) will be able to celebrate and us (north) will be allowed nowhere near, regardless of case numbers Sad

WeepingWinnie · 28/01/2021 17:46

Yes, they do. I haven't seen my parents for a year due to different tiers etc. The only thing that matters is London.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 28/01/2021 17:47

Sadly, it does appear that they will lockdown the North (and Midlands, we are doubly forgotten!) whilst letting the South East and London more freedom.

I remember at the very beginning, BJ saying "locking down London is not an option". Its a bit like London for one and all for London. Its frustrating.

LadyCatStark · 28/01/2021 17:54

I don’t worry, I know that’s what will happen.

DigitalGhost · 28/01/2021 17:59

It won't help when deciding the tiers that my local hospital is currently full and alot are transferred from the south.

Bettyboop89 · 28/01/2021 17:59

I will be breaking the rules at that point then. Especially if case numbers are dropping here.

@DigitalGhost where’s your local hospital?

It's not just North and South. In the Midlands we are forgotten about!
DigitalGhost · 28/01/2021 18:10

@beppyboop89 West Yorkshire. Pretty small hospital too so I imagine the surrounding are the same.
Widely known that there was hardly any covid patients in a weeks ago too and now suddenly full.

Bettyboop89 · 28/01/2021 18:14

@DigitalGhost we are in West Yorkshire too, Calderdale.

They are also cutting the supply of vaccines in the North West to supply London and the South East.

DigitalGhost · 28/01/2021 19:16

Which they denied!
So why did my local vaccine clinic get half as many jabs this week...

Swingometer · 28/01/2021 19:16

I'm also in West Yorkshire OP and know exactly what you mean

The cases locally are going down but extremely slowly, which considering we are in full lockdown is a huge concern. Cases seem to be dropping much quicker in other parts of the country.

Very depressing Confused

rosie39forever · 28/01/2021 19:18

You want to try living in the East Midlands we don't exist, Leicester never came out of lock down from last March.

SacramentoQueen · 28/01/2021 19:25

I think this might just be a case of ‘the grass is always greener’ rather than a conspiracy against the north. I live in the south east, and when we went into national lockdown in November our cases were really quite low. They then went up so we spent December in tier 3 (and Christmas in Tier 4 with no mixing at all) whereas plenty of other areas were in lower tiers and allowed to mix over Christmas. Now our numbers are back down and are some of the lowest in the country and we are in national lockdown again

StamfordFig · 28/01/2021 19:26

I'm expecting Greater Manchester to get royally shafted again.

People on here mention how last summer was ok, fairly normal. It wasn't here! I managed to get out for a meal twice and the boom - that was it.

DigitalGhost · 28/01/2021 19:49

Shite isn't it! I had a baby last May.
Looking like she's going to reach her first birthday before she really meets her family.

Beaniecats · 28/01/2021 19:56

Yes we will be highest tier again definitely

Medstudent12 · 28/01/2021 19:59

@SacramentoQueen honestly you don’t know what it’s like if you live in the south, the north and parts of Midlands have had MONTHS more of restrictions. Some areas were only on par with the south for 3-4 weeks before we had increased restrictions. Its frustrating for us, that’s all.

Yes same here. I'm in the south and was put in Tier 4 before Christmas so people in the North were allowed to see their family on Christmas day, many of us in the south couldn't see anyone. It's not always better down here!
