Have any obese people survived covid unscathed?

So I've seen in the news throughout about obesity causing problems relating to covid.
I have also seen many photos of people on news articles who have sadly passed from covid at a young age and they are almost always overweight.

I myself am very overweight. I am mid 30s. Since covid appeared I have been trying to lose weight. Infact I tried so hard I put myself into hospital. But of course when you have a lot to lose it isnt going to happen overnight. So, I am still very overweight. Need to lose about 9 stone now.

Ive been very careful throughout and still do but every time I get a sniffle I am terrified and it's really starting to effect me mentally.
My son has come down with something (I don't know how as he doesn't go anywhere) and I can feel he's passed it on to me. We are going for a test this afternoon. I'm hoping it's not covid but I am so scared that if I have got covid or I do ever get covid it is going to kill me.
Do you know anyone who is overweight who has had covid and recovered? As obviously you never see the good news online.

DH's morbidly obese great aunt who is 93 had it asymptomatically.

minny80 · 28/01/2021 19:37

My sister is morbidly obese and diabetic. She got infected after meeting her friend during the summer, and she was totally asymptomatic all the way through.

Donald Trump and Boris Johnson

Of course they have. In 2018 almost two thirds of adults in England were overweight or obese (and I bet it’s higher now after most of a year being in and out of lockdown). Not that many are dying of covid and of those that do, some are slim.

itsgettingweird · 28/01/2021 19:46

I'm clinically obese with BMI of 30.5

Admittedly when I had it I was a stone lighter (beginning of lockdown 1 and damn those pandemic pounds).

I was ill for about 6 weeks and did struggle to breathe for a few days.

But I didn't need hospital intervention.

It's certainly a risk. But it's not a guaranteed death sentence.

But well done for addressing your weight and trying to lose it. It'll do you far more good long term than just current covid risk.

I'm also trying as this has opened my eyes to just how fragile being overweight can make you.

Yes I know someone who must be about BMI 40 who has had it and recovered. No hospital treatment

Fatandnearly50 · 28/01/2021 19:59

@JKW36

Oh, also, as far as I know if your bmi is over 40 then you are in priority group 6 for the vaccines. I haven't been weighted at my gp for years and I wouldn't have been over 40 bmi then but I am now. Do I need to ring them and inform them? How will they know?
Sadly I’m not quite near enough to 50 to get a vaccine this year. Not far off though!

In terms of BMI, I phoned the GP as I was also lighter when I was last there so know their records would not be accurate re my BMI now. I told them my current BMI and offered to come in and be weighed if they wanted. The receptionist asked me to email in as a written record, I received an email back telling me they had updated my records. Tbh I would not have bothered had I actually been 50 but was scared about not getting a vaccine at all.

Thank you.

It's pretty scary though. I go from 1:35700 to 1:2004 (for death) & I'm 1:373 likely to be hospitalised. 83/100 where 100 is most 'at risk'.

Improved a bit when I put my postcode in.

Improves massively if I remove 'diabetic'. Way more than if I put a weight in the normal BMI. Unfortunately I can't change being diabetic IRL

I'd be interested if anyone has any links to any studies on diabetes & C19. I 'control' my diabetes through diet & exercise. I can keep it in a good range

Plussizejumpsuit · 28/01/2021 20:48

Yeah I know various people who are fat and fine. Age is still the biggest risk factor.

needadvice54321 · 28/01/2021 20:59

@Scottishgirl85

You would most likely be fine, but obesity is linked to diabetes, heart conditions and cancer amongst other things. These are far more likely to limit your life than covid ever will, and no vaccine can save you from them.
Exactly. If anything, Covid has really made me question my health so I'm trying to sort that out!

Thank you so much for the this thread. I really needed to read this. I am too trying to do something about my weight and constantly convinced I will die and it's my own fault. I was really poorly and needed steroids and since I have ballooned and with the medication since it just hasn't dropped. My bmi is around 39 and I am 29. I've been so scared and this honestly (I know I need to lose it and I am trying, I'm not just stopping) has reassured me no end. 💙

Nettleskeins · 28/01/2021 21:28

Overweight people are more likely to be vitamin D deficient. Please if you arent supplementing already, make Sure you take a 1000iu (25mcg) supplement daily in the winter months. Govt advice is half of this daily, so at the very least take that!!!! Please.

BonnieDundee · 28/01/2021 21:41

Me. Morbidly obese. Wasnt pleasant but was never seriously ill with it

Tarquinthecat · 29/01/2021 22:44

A close friend is 28 stone and over 60 and she had it last March.

Very bad cough and very high temperature, a week in bed and a week on the sofa then she was fine.
