UK holidays or staycations

Can I ask why people seem to think UK holidays will need to be cancelled this year?
I don’t understand.
This time last year we didn’t even really know about covid properly and we certainly didn’t have a vaccine. Yet people still went on holiday in the UK and abroad in the summer.
We went to Wales in July and I know many others who went away.

We have a coastal break booked in mid April, a night away in June for my birthday and a 4 night break in Dorset in August. I’m pretty optimistic that all will go ahead, the only one I’m not sure about is April.

Can anyone else explain the logic behind thinking things won’t go ahead in the spring/summer? Considering our position now compared to last year.

We haven't got anything booked as don't want to get our hopes up. Having said that, the moment it's possible I'll be booking something, probably in England where we live and somewhere that's generally been in the same tier as us.

On the other side of things, I see some posters are saying it’s unethical to possibly go to another area with a lower infection rate to your own. I also see that a lot of these places rely heavily on tourism and surely they’ll need that come the late spring/summer.

Depends on infection rates and how the vaccine stops transmission, i wonder if we will go into a more localised tier system with limited travel?

On foreign travel, we aren't part of the EU, they will have their own vaccine passport scheme and we won't be part of it, i think that will be the case for the next year or two.

Vert short term thinking getting a few weeks extra tourism is worth months of lockdown?

Nobody knows. But it's certain that last summer's overseas trips brought increased virus into the U.K.

I think that we may have to face restrictions on UK holidays until everyone is vaccinated. For example, hotel open but buffet not sit down meals, swimming pools a bookable time slot, some attractions such as museums limited numbers and time slot bookings.

Evidence so far from Israel and from vaccinated NHS staff is that vaccines slow infection rates (which will ripple out into community benefits) , and the rate at which we are vaccinating means that we will be in a better position than last summer, when UK holidays were able to happen.

Infection rates are also now falling rapidly thanks precautions taken, vaccinations so far, and will fall even further as this wave burns out and spring comes.
