Colds in the time of Covid

In the past I’d go to work with a cold provided I wasn’t really runny/sneezy.

I am currently wfh but was in the office today for my weekly visit for mail and notices etc. I had a runny nose last but put it down to allergies as I did some dusty work last night. Took antihistamine and went to bed.

Woke up felt fine. By 11 it was clearly not allergies but am I being unreasonable to think it’s just a cold?

Runny as hell
Very sneezy
Scratchy throat
None of the three symptoms.

Should I get a test? Should I self isolate? Should my children (who are in school and at a CM) and DH?

I find this all really stressful to know what’s for the best.

If you don’t have Covid symptoms then I don’t think you should have a test or isolate.

There’s no way of knowing that it isn’t Covid, but equally there is no way of knowing that you don’t have covid when you’re asymptomatic, so I think you should follow the genera principle of always assuming that you have it. Follow the guidelines of keeping your distance from people, only going out when you need to, working from home if you can, etc

Ok thanks. That’s my instinct.

I’d get a test, symptoms seem to vary in everyone and personally I’d hate to be the person that thought I had ‘just a cold’ but it turned out to be Covid. It’s better to be safe than sorry in my world especially if your children are attending school and a childminder.

I’d say get a test. I had almost the exact same symptoms last week, runny as hell nose, sneezing, low and behold the following day I had a test and it came back positive. I only knew because I do twice weekly lateral flow testing, it was my day to test and I got a positive result. Fortunately I have been ok with it but if I wasn’t doing the twice a week lateral flow testing I would have just thought I had a cold and I wouldn’t have gone for a covid test. It’s a bit scary really.

It’s a pain in the neck but I would get one just to be sure.

Ok. I’ve booked one. So does everyone at home self isolate with me now?

My understanding is that the people in your house only have to isolate if your test comes back positive. Good luck

Thedarksideofthemoon30 · 26/01/2021 22:45

I had the same this weekend. Got a test and it’s negative thank god!

JabbyMcJabface · 26/01/2021 22:48

You don’t have any of the three symptoms so even though you’ve booked a test you don’t need to isolate. Up to you whether you chose to or not.

If you are awaiting a test result they have to isolate until you get a negative back (from that test) as the assumption is you have it until proven otherwise.

Ok thank you. I just want to do the right thing.
