Is anyone else’s child putting weight on?

All 3dc are normally active and healthy. Normally at school they run around etc

Nothing has changed with their eating just not moving about as much apart from our daily walk.

They are all putting abit of weight on. Especially my 4yo 🙈 she seems constantly hungry even though I’m trying to make sure she eats not much more. It’s driving me insane that she constantly asking for food, well they all are!

Yes. Ds15 is a whippet, no worries there despite zero exercise atm. Ds13 however is different, he's always been a stockier build but it's usually kept in check by his hour's worth of walk for school everyday, judo once a week, running round at lunchtimes, scouts once a week, and a family walk every weekend. It's complicated by the fact that he's autistic and routine matters and is exceptionally difficult to change, but the only exercise he does currently is twenty minutes walk three times a week and very occasionally a weekend walk. It's really showing unfortunately and it's difficult to reduce his intake for the same reasons. He needs to lose probably ten pounds now compared to the five pounds that would have done it a year ago. If he were half the age you'd call it puppy fat, but he's not and it isn't. We're struggling to help him tbh.

That’s exactly like my two oldest. My daughter (13) can eat loads and not put any weight on although lately she’s put about 5lbs on but still a healthy weight.

My ds is 11 and weighs the exact same. He’s classed as obese. He has to eat at the same time every day, and have what he would have normally at school.

But he barely leaves the house anymore. He used to play football etc and ran for the school.

Yes definitely. My daughter is nearly 9. She's always been lean but is putting weight on. She's not snaking or eating more than normal. But is doing very little exercise compared to normal. I've been taking her out everyday but it's not the same.

Not in a bad way but only because they have puberty on their side and are shooting up. They certainly arent moving enough.

We all usually put on a bit of timber around Christmas/New Year, ours definitely a bit looser, aren't we all.

But there is no swimming, football, gym or school sports which usually gets them back on track. And us, well swimming at least.

I have taken matters into my own hands and ordered a treadmill this morning.

Fingers crossed it's an investment in our present and future family fitness.

Yeah, both of mine are. It’s the lack of normal daily exercise. I’ve hidden all the snacks as they seem to be eating them less sensibly.

hexonthebeach · 26/01/2021 14:06

Mine no but it's not a nice thing to say but I have noticed in general the DCs friends are, they all look obese compared to pre covid... then again so do I!

Hairwizard · 26/01/2021 14:10

Ive noticed this though not with mine. They dont fking eat enough imo. Though snack items are gone literally in 2 days.
Their friends next door who are in same school have def filled out a bit, they would normally be out at football, gaelic, swimming etc but obv thats been off.
Not helping with weather being shite either. Mine were out most of the weekend playing in the snow with the rest of them and was great to see them out in the fresh air.

littlestpogo · 26/01/2021 14:16

Yes I noticed this to my shame with my younger DS ( eldest I have the opposite problem and it’s been a struggle to keep him from being underweight).

Weighed my youngest and he is nearing overweight. Feel so annoyed at myself for not noticing sooner - again he is eating pretty much the same but isn’t active in the way he used to be ( or how the eldest naturally is) We go out for a run around and walk every day but I’m a single mum working full time and I struggle to fit more in. Am now watching his portions and have limited snacks a lot. It’s a big concern though.

Delatron · 26/01/2021 14:37

Mine haven’t but they are much less active.
Despite my attempts at dragging them out for a run 2-3 things a week. And walks at the weekend. But it doesn’t add up to the hours and hours of sports and activities they do at school.

It really stresses me out and it’s so unhealthy. Much harder this time round because of the dark evenings. Very hard to tempt them with a dark, rainy, cold walk.

I wish the government would exclude kids from the rules. Maybe have a rule of 6 for kids outdoors and let small sports groups run. They are suffering in so many ways.
