How are they going to back pedal the fear?

They’ve upped it so much recently.
I understand what they’re doing and why they’re doing it,
But so many people are terrified to leave the house (currently working as they want it to) but what happens when they want to ease restrictions and bring some of the economy back?
I’m worried that they’ve ramped up the fear so much now that people don’t actually want restrictions to ease, don’t want to go back to their ‘real life’.

AIBU?

I think most people are itching to get back to “real life”, me included. I don’t know many people who’ll be back to doing the stuff they did before at the first opportunity.

Also, isn’t it the general view on MN that there’s rampant rule breaking? Hardly suggests that people are going to keep hiding under the bed when we open up.

AuntyClementine · 25/01/2021 22:43

Sorry, that should be “not be back”

Bluntness100 · 25/01/2021 22:43

I think it’s the opposite people are pig sick of it and can’t wait to see thei friends and family.

Bluntness100 · 25/01/2021 22:45

Op are you scared? Are you referring to yourself here when you say people don’t want resctricitons to ease and don’t want to get back to real life?

I think that’s a minority view to be honest,

JC17fj74 · 25/01/2021 22:46

It's working. The last week my anxiety has been through the roof and I'm so worried about it all now it's keeping me awake at night 😭 I have been relatively calm up until now but since hearing about the rise in cases, big number of deaths and the new variant being more deadly I'm a nervous wreck.
😭😭

Heatheronthehill · 25/01/2021 22:48

@Bluntness100 no, not me, I can’t wait to get back to relative normal, but I was reading the Guardian comments section earlier and I couldn’t believe how many people were almost begging for a stricter lockdown and saying they didn’t want restrictions to be eased any time soon, maybe not this side of autumn!

OP posts:
Crumpetycrump · 25/01/2021 22:49

They did the same last year and then we had a pretty good summer out and about.

Justthebeerlighttoguide · 25/01/2021 22:52

I'm sure the guardian readers will change their minds when they see the vaccine working etc.

The fear will recede, when there is little left to fear.

Bluntness100 · 25/01/2021 22:53

Oh, I think it depends what you read op. Look at Boris’S Instagram, every time they put an announcement out hundreds of thousands of people pile in saying end lock down now.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 25/01/2021 22:55

I think the world is bigger than the ultra cautious MN far left

Everyone I know is more scared of the half life we are now living

TheNinjaWife · 25/01/2021 22:55

It’s as though we are living in some sort of alternative universe where all critical thinking has been eroded.

Beaniecats · 25/01/2021 23:05

Most of us aren't buying into the fear propaganda, going to be tough for the genuinely terrified though

Bluntness100 · 25/01/2021 23:08

Agree, everyone I know is gagging for it to be over and groans when it’s speculated it’s increasing. My friendship group were texting tonight about fingers crossed for mid feb so we could all get together and have a bit of a party.

My daughter and her partner started their new jobs last year and habe pretty much had to do the whole thing in lock down virtually, it’s shit.

MrsGradyOldLady · 25/01/2021 23:12

I don't think it's just the fear of Covid that will need to be overcome. It's the massive divisions in society between pro and anti lockdowners, pro and anti vax, all the nasty posts on social media, the furloughed and non furloughed. In addition to all the existing issues we were all divided on such as Trans issues, Trump, Left v Right etc etc etc

I know personally loads of people who have become agoraphobic to greater or lesser degree including my elderly mother, my adult daughter and my teen daughter. I know people who've lost their businesses, their jobs, or are in dire financial circumstances. It's a mess alright...

Covidcorvid · 25/01/2021 23:13

Eat out to help out. The thought of a free Nando’s/pizza will have people out in their droves! Worked last time.

lunapeace · 25/01/2021 23:24

I think it's the opposite, most people are complying because it's freezing cold and miserable. Come the spring, it will be a different story. What's the point of living if you're not actually living.

YogaLite · 25/01/2021 23:49

I think it will create a deep divide with vulnerable becoming invisible Sad

Who is this "they"?
sally067 · 25/01/2021 23:57

My boss, who is pretty senior and fairly influential has said we won't be going back to the office until cases get below 300 a day across the whole of the UK due to her fear. She has taken the lead from ADP (payroll software company) who have said that that will be their policy for returning to the office apparently.

She rare goes out, even for a walk outside and had a go at me on Zoom the other day because I told her I don't quarantine my post or wipe down my shopping.

This is a healthy woman in her 30s with no underlying issues and she is terrified of it, to her it's as serious as Ebola.

I don't know how we'll ever get back to normal with this kind of fear. The only way will be if the press stop reporting on it and surely the only way cases will drop below 300 is if the NHS stop testing.

Randomly she is also an anti-vaxxer and has no intention of getting the vaccine.

LunaHeather · 26/01/2021 00:01

Honestly OP, I am past caring

If there is a period of time where London is quieter because scared people are at home, and I can roam freely and take lots of pictures, great.

People can't keep refusing to go to work, furlough will run out.

Basically I've hit "I'm all right Jack". The scared have ruined so much. Sod them. I don't think they were the ones doing Eat Out To Help Out btw, nothing will get these people out. They walk into traffic and wear masks outdoors.

tobee · 26/01/2021 00:09

It'll be peer pressure that gets people back to normal. And seeing others going out and about.

I'm pretty hopeful that most people suffering from agoraphobia right now will find that it eases relatively quickly.

tobee · 26/01/2021 00:10

I'm currently very worried about the devastation to business that we will find when we emerge.

LunaHeather · 26/01/2021 00:25

@tobee

I'm currently very worried about the devastation to business that we will find when we emerge.
That's plain to see in London already, and I'm guessing across the country. No "emerging" necessary to see it.
