Pfizer or AZ - first shot most protection

Does anyone know which vaccine gives the most protection from the first shot? I know it’s all uncertain, but the government initially said 85%, then early data from Israel was saying 33%, but i think more recent is saying 60% or so. But I can’t find anything on first shot AZ? Thanks

It makes no difference. You take what you are given. My DH was given the Pfizer. When I went two weeks later they were giving the Oxford. Just grateful to get something.

OhBabooahka · 25/01/2021 09:36

You know you don't get a choice? You have what's available on the day.

Meredithgrey1 · 25/01/2021 09:40

The first two responses are bizarre. OP hasn’t said she’ll turn down one of them if she isn’t happy, maybe she’s just interested!

That's not the impression I got from the post though.

@OhBabooahka that's very odd, where has op even given a hint of her wanting to choose which vaccine she has??

TheDrsDocMartens · 25/01/2021 10:18

I’d be interested to know this and I’m not going to turn one down.

I’m really interested in this topic if anyone has any thoughts? Obviously you can’t choose and just grateful that vaccines are been dished out at speed.

Both my parents in their 70’s have just had Pfizer jab but I was speaking to someone who would prefer AZ.

Eyewhisker · 02/02/2021 22:23

From the scientific papers, the Pfizer jab gives much higher protection - 89% after one dose, compared to 76% at best for AZ.

Motorina · 02/02/2021 22:26

JCVI says Pfizer 89% from day 15 to day 21 app.box.com/s/uwwn2dv4o2d0ena726gf4403f3p2acnu?fbclid=IwAR2N23yHb2USwyE49PTv9rMG68ncPKtAt_Bix-9C0xiLGzM4SxdzI_vQosY

Research out today says Oxford 76% effective from day 22 to day 90 news.sky.com/story/oxford-vaccine-may-have-67-effect-on-transmission-and-protection-remains-for-three-month-jab-interval-12206734

Both are effectively 100% effective against dying from Covid.

I am sure updated 'realworld' figures will come out, as vaccine rollouts continue.

Why shouldn’t people be able to choose??? Why can’t it say which vaccine is being used when you book online for an appointment? When did we suddenly decide to take choice away from people? If I go to the doctors for the pill I have a say in which one I have after being told the facts. Surely it should be the same for the vaccines Confused

Do you choose which flu vaccine you have?

I think right now it’s about getting them into people. We don’t have the luxury of being able to choose

CrackOpenTheGin · 03/02/2021 09:43

But some people want one, some want the other. They make the choice on the vaccine slots available. When they so heavily publicise the results for each jab they can’t expect people not to have preferences.
