Hi, I am just amazed at how most of the mass market hand sanitisers available in shops and supermarkets kill bacteria only ! They mostly say "Kill 99.99% of bacteria", so they are absolutely useless against Covid which is of course, a virus ! There is a lot of ignorance around this ! People think they are protected but they're not .

Bog standard soap kills covid if used properly. Ffs

dementedpixie · 23/01/2021 17:07

We know that. You've not always got access to a sink though

ProudAuntie76 · 23/01/2021 17:08

But I don’t think people are using hand sanitizer INSTEAD of soap...they are using it when out and and about when it’s not possible to wash their hands with soap and water and then following up with soap and water as soon as they get to a sink.

I really thought everyone knew this already 🤷🏻‍♀️

Me too. I can’t believe there are people that think that people who use hand sanitizer never use soap and water Confused.
LegoAndLolDolls · 23/01/2021 17:15

Up your game people! If I leave house which i never do unless it's an emergency like meteor strike, i always take my sink with me! FFS this is why its spreading!

( btw that's pure BS but who cares)

MRex · 23/01/2021 17:21

Walks to be limited in future by the length of the hosepipe to clean toddler hands while hovering over a drain.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/01/2021 17:21

I use 70% hand gel. It states it kills viruses. I wash my hands at home, but if I’m out and about I can’t wash with soap and water. So that’s where the hand gel comes in.

OP are you posting from 2020?

Cookerhood · 23/01/2021 17:26

I think Which investigated recently and not all.the hand sanitisers have the alcohol.vontent they claim, so do check

endofthelinefinally · 23/01/2021 17:33

So, the alternative would be big rucksack containing a billycan, camping stove, matches, large bottle of water, soap, towel. How would I carry my shopping home?

Craicon · 23/01/2021 18:51

Just clarifying a few things. Obviously I know that soap and water is the best way to kill this virus, hand gels for out and about when no access to sinks. I do not understand why the bog standard gels e.g carex etc don't state that they kill viruses if they do! Why say " kill 99.99% of bacteria" , but no mention of killing viruses ???! Especially in the current situation!

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 23/01/2021 18:53

Because they don't kill all viruses so it would need to say which ones it did and which ones it didn't.

KimNotEllen · 23/01/2021 18:54

I thought they can't claim to kills viruses because they don't work against all viruses? Some have a different shell

Craicon · 23/01/2021 18:55

Ok , so do they kill.all bacteria then ? I think many of you think I am ignorant but I just would like to know.

OP posts:
Craicon · 23/01/2021 18:56

Apart from .01% !!

Because it would cost more than it’s worth to test viruses in the lab and back it up with statistical evidence from research studies which is what they have to do in order to legally advertise it as antiviral. They know the same technology that works on bacteria works on viruses too from OTHER research studies, they just don’t want to waste money funding their own when they don’t have to.

If you are that fixated on it and it’s irritating you so much buy Dettol Handgel which advertises as both anti bacterial and anti viral or Boots Antiviral Handfoam instead of Carex.

dementedpixie · 23/01/2021 18:59

If they state they kill 99.99% of bacteria then that pretty much counts as most of them

Hand gel doesn't kill norovirus for example and that must account for a high % of viruses

dementedpixie · 23/01/2021 19:00

Although the antiviral hand foam isn't as effective as alcohol gel on covid 19

Craicon · 23/01/2021 19:01

I have already bought hospital grade stuff. I was just curious. Jeez

OP posts:
NannyR · 23/01/2021 19:02

It's to do with regulations - because they don't kill all viruses, they would have to name the ones they are effective against " kills covid19". If they specifically mention a virus, then they are classed as a medicine rather than a cosmetic or health care product, which requires lots more testing.

That last comment was to ProudAuntie76. For some reason I couldn't quite your comment .

You cant quote if the person you're quoting has quoted in their post

Cormoran · 23/01/2021 19:04

I make my own following the WHO guidelines.
www.who.int/publications/i/item/WHO-IER-PSP-2010.5 (of course divide ingredients by 10 unless you want to make a bucket of it) and it is either ethanol based 83% alcohol or Isopropyl alcohol based 75% .
Very easy, very cheap, dries very quickly (which usually is a sign of high alcohol content)

AViewFromTheWindows · 23/01/2021 20:46

We had someone come into the store who said he needed anti bac. He explained that he needed it for the classroom at the local school so therefore it couldn't have alcohol. He did not understand anti bac did not kill viruses if it was alcohol free...but insisted the kids needed to be protected from both covid and the alcohol 🤷‍♀️

Have we turned back time to March last year. Maybe try a thing called google OP.
