@wanderings

Yep. All the more reason to learn to live with the virus, and end this hysterical farce of lockdown.
Yep. ^This!
Topttumps · 23/01/2021 16:24

It will probably be there in the background yes. Hopefully though the vaccine will do it job to mitigate symptoms for the most vulnerable and we can get back to a level where things can return to normal.

@Yohoheaveho

Even whitty has spoke of optimism Yeah but he looks terrified
I've never once seen him look terrified. He always looks calm and professional to me, though over the last months I do think he's looked more tired. That's to be expected though.
Wherediditgo · 23/01/2021 17:08

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum

Yes they told us that in March

We will vaccinate and learn new medical was to deal with it.

Then hopefully it will become milder like a cold

With that blonde haired tosser stood to his left at every press conference, I'd be looking a little tired too.

Here's some of the other diseases and viruses which we "just learned to live with":

diptheria
hepatitis B
polio
tetanus
whooping cough
measles
mumps
rubella
HPV

Just because something is here forever, doesn't mean it's going to force us to live our life less fully.

Well said Nellodee. To that list I’d add HIV, anthrax, rotavirus, syphilis, and a range of parasitic diseases I can’t face Googling for fear of what I might see. Even Ebola outbreaks can now be brought under control swiftly by well-trained teams springing into action to ring vaccinate everyone in the vicinity.

Total eradication is an ideal solution and we haven’t given up hope of achieving that for polio, but we’ve achieved huge victories against other diseases that fall short of that target.

Yohoheaveho · 23/01/2021 18:08

maybe I was projecting and it's me that looks terrified not WhittyShock

This thread has actually made me feel better. Nice to see so many rational people, and the lack of hysteria is reassuring! So thank you Smile

MechantGourmet · 24/01/2021 12:16

Smallpox was with us fro hundreds of years until finally eradicated, and the fatality rate was far higher than covid.

Flu is with us, covid will be the same. The vaccines will help us live with it and prevent too many who catch it becoming seriously ill or dying.

jimmyhill · 24/01/2021 13:53

I'm not particularly worried about the long-term outlook for covid but I'm amazed at anyone who thinks hundreds of years of smallpox is a calming comparison.

Fizzybottle · 24/01/2021 14:13

Of course it will be here forever. Where is anyone expecting it to go?
Either we will be vaccinated enough for herd immunity + enough people having had it, or it will mutate into something milder.

The spanish flu didn't disappear - we have flu don't we - and every year vast numbers of people tragically die of it.

Very few illnesses have ever actually disappeared. I wouldn't worry. Headlines like that are sensationalist bullshit designed to freak people out.
