“We’re all in the same boat.”

This is something I hear a lot in relation to the pandemic. Sometimes as a supportive comment but equally it’s sometimes used in an almost dismissive way. However, my counsellor said something profound to me the other day. She said we’re not all in the same boat at all. We all have different circumstances, different home lives, our resilience varies as does our mental health. Instead she said, “We’re all in the same sea, but not the same boat” I found it profound. I suppose my point is that we shouldn’t feel guilty for struggling nor should we play the game of lockdown one upmanship. Be kind to people and try not to judge too harshly, as you never know what others are going through.

I must have found it extra profound since I saw it necessary to mention that twice Grin

We are all in the same storm, but not all of us are in the same boat. Some have luxury yachts, some in a canoe and some clinging onto driftwood

Yes I suppose storm may be more suitable than sea in this analogy.

I was told...
Same storm different boats.

lljkk · 22/01/2021 15:04

I think my family is far less harmed by the current crisis than most people -- so not in the same boat at all.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/01/2021 15:40

Within a household, you can be different classes within the same boat...

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/01/2021 15:49

Of course we’re not.l in the same boat, and if I were one of the people in the smallest, leakiest, self-propelled boats I’d feel mightily aggrieved at the people sailing past on luxury yachts saying it. I have a secure job, a spacious and comfortable home, a solid relationship, no children and I’m young, slim, healthy and fit with no concern about Covid because it would almost certainly be mild for me. I’m as far away from the stormy sea as it’s possible to be, all I’ve lost is a few weeks of parties and seeing my friends - which I got to do when restrictions were looser. There’s barely a sea where I am, let alone a storm!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/01/2021 15:51

Absolutely. I'm relatively OK, still have a job and I'm young and healthy so Covid not a huge worry personally. I know people that haven't worked since March, vulnerable to Covid. Then there are people like Jeff Bezos who are getting richer than ever. All different circumstances.

Ch3rish · 22/01/2021 15:52

Yes, all in the same storm but different boats has been a meme type thing since March. Or maybe meme isn't the right word but the kind of saying that's shared all over social media

the80sweregreat · 22/01/2021 15:53

Some people's ' boats' are luxury cruise liners with balcony views and five star food on the Caribbean Sea.
Others have tiny leaky boats and some have a life jacket and not much else.
We are not ' in it together' at all sadly :(
It's done a lot of damage.

frozendaisy · 22/01/2021 16:02

Some boats have sank.

frozendaisy · 22/01/2021 16:02

Sank? Sunk?

foxhat · 22/01/2021 16:10

Yes indeed. We are riding the same storm but I would rather be in a luxury yacht which has a fully stocked bar and a hot tub on the deck than a leaky dingy. There is far too much of people saying 'I don't mind lockdown really, so what are other complaining about' IMHO. For some people what is happening is absolutely horrific. For others, it's just a bit boring. A lucky few are even thriving.

picklemewalnuts · 22/01/2021 16:24

The reason we are in the same boat is that each person's behaviour affects everyone else. The idiot holding a party for 400 people is in your boat, holding a barbecue. The guy going to work when positive is sat next to you in your boat, coughing on you.

We won't get over this, world wide, unless we cooperate- vaccines, lockdowns, travel....

People living in cramped quarters in India wouldn't feel like you were in their boat. But we are undoubtedly tied in to this situation together.
