Surely a doctor wouldn't say this, right?

Early on in the pandemic I joined a Facebook group for survivors of covid because I needed to hear some good news and not just the media scare mongering.

I don't visit the group anymore but I occasionally see posts on my newsfeed when somebody posts there.

A woman posted today about having just lost her DM to covid, she went into alot of detail about what happened with her mum in the lead up to her death so she sounded genuine, although she went on to say (and I quote)

"Her doctor told us last night that if people don't get the vaccine then in 5 years time there won't be one human left on this planet"

That is BS isn't it? The doctor saying so, that is. No doctor would make such an outlandish statement.

Mankind have survived much deadlier pandemics than this long before vaccines were so readily available. This virus has something like a 98% survival rate (don't quote me on that, I stay away from the news these days)

I didn't want to question her given the circumstances but that comment has made me quite Confused

Thoughts?

Yes, total BS. Considering the virus has a survival rate of something like 98-99% why would a doctor have any reason for saying such a ridiculous thing?

DumpTrump · 22/01/2021 14:34

Yes it's BS.

Thirtyrock39 · 22/01/2021 14:37

Completely not true , some people just take a sick pleasure out of being doom mongers. The Spanish flu I think killed off about 3% of the world's population in about two years - think it was 500 million...and within a few years they had learnt to live with it. I'm very cautious with covid and not a denier whatsoever but there is no truth in that dr thing whatsoever. I'm pro vaccine too (have had it x2) but even without the vaccine I think we would be getting back to normal in a few years - the vaccine means it'll be much much sooner though

umpteennamechanges · 22/01/2021 14:46

Total nonsense.

COVID is nowhere near as bad as many diseases that existed before vaccinations in the 1800s and earlier.

Calmandmeasured1 · 22/01/2021 14:48

Whatever the responses here, you will not ascertain whether or not the doctor said this to the woman in your group. Some nurses have been reported in the press for denying the existence of Covid. Just because a doctor is qualified doesn't prevent them from believing or expressing ridiculous opinions.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/01/2021 14:50

Even if the doctor did say it (unlikely) he cannot know what will happen in 5 years time. Having medical qualifications doesn't give you powers of seeing into the future. So yeah, bullshit.

I gently commented (see attatched picture) and an admin for the group removed my comment under the following grounds.

Even if it were true, no doctor would say it. I was in West Africa in 2014/15 dealing with a disease that has a 90% mortality rate. Nobody - not one member of staff - ever told someone they were going to die or likely to die even when it was blindingly hopeless and we knew they would die. The will to live can produce miracles. Compared to that mortality rate, Covid isn't even in the ball park.

Even if we never had a vaccine, the chances of Covid wiping out the human race ever is miniscule (and it would have to morph into something very scary first). The SARS-CoV-2 is a very, very efficient virus. It thrives on not killing its hosts. Kill your host and you die too. That's "Virus 101". The virus exists to reproduce, just like all living things. The deaths are tragic, but they are also, in global terms, "nature". Nature culls the weak and the vulnerable all the time. The virus isn't setting out to kill, it is a by-product of this natural process. Humans have developed to a point where we can interrupt nature, but we cannot control it. The doctor, if they said this, should be ashamed of themselves - it isn't true.

On that basis it would appear that they are conspiracy theorists, so you may be best off out of there!
bumbleymummy · 22/01/2021 15:05

What utter BS 🙄

dingoesatemybaby · 22/01/2021 15:19

What utter crap.

Spanish flu was far more deadly, and they didn't have the science, technology or medical facilities we have now back then and yet, here we all are.

What an idiot.

Halfaweeklyshop · 22/01/2021 15:24

I complained to the admin about allowing people to spread misinformation and censoring others for disputing the misinformation.

I've now been banned from posting at all, no skin off my nose as I don't use the group I'm just surprised that they support such BS.

The group is called "Survivor Corps"

Your best off out of it and this is a perfect example of how dangerous social media/the internet is. There are no boundaries and people enclose themselves in echo chambers. Add that to having nothing else to distract them irl at the moment and it’s not great

TofuCat · 22/01/2021 15:38

Perhaps the Doctor said something like every person will have had it in 5 years if they don’t have the vaccine and she’s twisted it up in her head.
