A friend applied for a job in a care home for the elderly and has been offered the role.

Do you think friend should be offered the Covid vaccine before her first shift?

I don’t imagine she will be or loads of people could apply and accept jobs, get the jab, then quit before starting work. It takes nearly 2 weeks for it to be effective in any case. When is she due to start?

the Pfizer trials found a 52% efficacy rate 12 days after the first vaccine does (rising to 95% after the second).

She's due to start 30th January.
I thought that too about people applying for jobs just to get the vaccineHmm.
Friend is a fantastic person and has worked in care for 15+ years only taking a break from work since June 20 as she was so terrified about catching the virus and was struggling mentally.
She applied for this job now as is struggling financially and since getting a start date she's getting cold feet.
The staff are receiving the vaccine this week but as she's not actually started yet, she's not been included.

People wouldn't be given the jab before they start i would imagine. To much chance of that being abused.

I think she should be offered it along with the other staff, even if she hasn't started. Considering it may help prevent transmission, this would be in the best interests of the residents.

Yes, that system could be abused but that's hypothetical, and it's weighing up that hypothetical risk against the protection of staff and residents.

(Also the situation is fairly specific in that the other staff are being vaccinated in the particular short period between confirming the post and starting. If somebody was seeking to apply for jobs specifically to abuse the system in this way it might be quite difficult to get it right with the timing - no point applying somewhere where staff were already being vaccinated, or where staff were getting vaccinated around on or after the start date).

I did suggest calling the home manager to discuss issues.
Would this go down like a lead balloon?
Friend seems to think it will make it look like she is indeed overly interested in the vaxConfused
