Hi just hoping for some advice from anyone who has had Covid and has Diabetes?
My parents are both over 55 and type 1 diabetic.
My Dad has been in contact with someone with Covid so they are now isolating and I'm just praying they don't get any symptoms.
How has covid affected your diabetes and what were the symptoms you experienced?
I am so worried about them and I can't even get them shopping as I am isolating with my husband as we also have covid.
I am an only child and they haven't got any other family to support them.
My Mum is convinced if she gets this then that will be the end for her 😢

My parents are both diabetic (DM is borderline), and in their 60s. Both caught Covid in September. DF was asymptomatic and DM had the usual fever, chills and loss of taste/smell. She was fine after a week. I would tell your DM not to worry, they hopefully won't have caught it anyway.

The diabetic people I know seriously unwell with Covid also have/had other issues such as obesity and Asthma.

I'm pregnant type 2 diabetic and on insulin for pregnancy only. Positive 15 days ago for covid and sugar levels were up and down due to not eating normal as I was unwell and when I did fancy a bowl of cornflakes sent readings high.
Still no sense of smell or taste but diabetes under control and diabetic consultant told me not to worry

I’ve read of a few type 1’s that had a bad case of it but managed at home and recovered.

My husband is mid 60s and type 1 diabetic. We had covid at Xmas. He increased insulin to ‘sick day ‘ levels and upped his testing regime. Our diet was very simple with no extras or alcohol that would produce swings in blood glucose. He kept his blood glucose levels under control. Fortunately he had mild symptoms and we are now recovered.

Your parents may get a mild case (if they do test positive) and all they (and you) can do is take things day by day.

Hope this is helpful.

Type 1 here, although so far I have dodges covid thankfully.

Had a ressuring chat with my nurse at my last appointment though. She was clear that they have got more confident in managing things as times gone on so try not to panic.

The big risk as with most illnesses is going into DKA, and it does seem covid can drive sugars high very quickly. The NHS have put together an additional set of sick day rules specific to covid, she told me following these was proving to be a big difference in terms of reducing the risk of needing intensive care. <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.england.nhs.uk/midlands/wp-content/uploads/sites/46/2020/11/Covid-19-Sick-Day-Rules-Type-1-DM-and-pump-therapy.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjAgtHLoKruAhVwQUEAHUC8DHQQFjAAegQIBhAC&usg=AOvVaw1QsbZmsYmMAMSEz2ssf5AM" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">sick day rules

Hi, I am also type 1. From what I have read diabetes would only be an issue if it is uncontrolled. Similar if your blood sugars are bad then any illness will be worse. If they are generally healthy then they have no more to worry about then the average person of their age.

As with any illness it would make their blood sugars a bit off so more monitoring required, but I’m sure they are well used to that.

The advice is follow sick day rules, OP. Hope all is OK.
