Because there is a high amount of carehone deaths, what will happen to care homes?

Will some of them close down?

They will soon restock.

YoBeaches · 19/01/2021 20:58

I wouldn't think so. There will equally be a lot of elderly who can no longer manage on their own or suffer longer term health issues in surviving COVID. They usually have waiting lists for new residents.

CoffeeRunner · 19/01/2021 20:59

God no. For a start we have an ageing population. Many of the better homes had, and still will have, waiting lists.

Covid will have also created new customers for the nursing homes. Imagine a previously reasonably well 80 year old, managing well with living alone who then catches Covid & is left with long term issues that mean living alone is no longer safe or possible.

Until December I worked on a Covid Ward & met several patients for whom this was the case.

There is always someone that is unable to care for themselves.
Ageing population.
Covid.
Waiting lists.
Luckly we have no one die from covid.

wonkylegs · 19/01/2021 21:06

Some have already closed
There is currently less demand through deaths but also families keeping loved ones out of them where possible to keep them safe but there are also increased running costs due to the precautions, sickness rates, staff shortages etc
So homes that were on shaky financial ground faced higher costs but less income.

Lots of care homes have closed in recent years. Despite the popular idea that they are a licence to print money many aren't making money so buildings being sold off. Hidden costs are far higher than most people realise.

I work in admin/payroll in a care home and see the figures.

Peggyslantern · 19/01/2021 21:12

Some have actually said they are looking at having to close.

Haenow · 19/01/2021 22:12

It’s a real problem. Local authorities were given additional funds to support services affected by Covid but it may not be enough. Many care homes we were hanging by a (financial) thread even before this.

PrivateHall · 19/01/2021 22:15

Flip, I hadn't thought of this! How sad. I actually had assumed they would gain more residents due to isolation leading to a reduction in mobility and independence and maybe even cognitive function Sad

AnnaMagnani · 19/01/2021 22:17

Nobody wants to go in them at the moment because of the absence of family visits. They will do anything to stay at home.

Incyra · 19/01/2021 22:21

Some care homes will have lost many residents in very short space of time and would be unable to bring new residents in until completely clear of covid in which case they will have lost thousands and thousands of pounds.

Haenow · 19/01/2021 22:23

Care homes will be losing money from lack of respite/short stay residents too. People aren’t going for respite/short stays because; they cannot have visitors, they have to isolate in their room for 14 days (some respite stays are shorter than this!), the increased risk of contracting covid and fewer activities.
