COVID deaths recording

How comfortable are we all that the deaths being recorded are an accurate reflection of mortality because of COVID, rather than people "with" covid who unfortunately would have died anyway.

Is there anywhere other than Gibralter that actually breaks these figures down?

19th January
Deaths with COVID 42
Deaths from COVID 5
Total - 49

The UK would have just published 49 as their figure.

The ONS publish the statistics every week of deaths mentioning covid19 on the death certificate, including the % where Covid was the underlying (main) cause of death on the death certificate. This figure has varied between 88% and 90% throughout. (The remaining percentage is where it was a contributory cause, but not the underlying one).

52,676 deaths were registered in England in December 2020, 10,594 deaths more than the five-year average (2015 to 2019).

In Wales, there were 3,941 deaths registered; 1,075 deaths more than the five-year average

COVID19 was the most common cause for deaths registered in England and Wales from January to December 2020.

Latest ONS analysis today confirms age-adjusted mortality deteriorated at an annual rate of 13% in England in 2020. In line with the numbers we reported on last week. This is the worst single year deterioration in mortality since 1929.

The OPs figures are back to front! So around 10% died WITH COVID. 99% OF COVID.

Tearsofthemushroom · 19/01/2021 20:31

90%
Here’s the link, it’s a very small increase, and in fact by nov last year deaths in the Uk were lower than 2019.

www.macrotrends.net/countries/GBR/united-kingdom/death-rate
That's incorrect.

The provisional age-standardised mortality rate (ASMR) for the UK was around 13% higher in 2020 than for 2019.

Also I am not sure why you say by November 2020, as you need to compare a full year with a full year.

polanama · 19/01/2021 20:50

Bluntness100 your link clearly states those figures are projections and DO NOT include impact of Covid!

Bluntness100 · 19/01/2021 20:51

Sorry wrong link, it’s easily googable though,

FreshFreesias · 19/01/2021 20:53

Many people who have died have Covid reported on their death certificate when they actually died of something else.

frumpety · 19/01/2021 20:59

@FreshFreesias quick google of how to fill in a MCCD might be useful to you.

Witchend · 19/01/2021 21:25

Maybe, but I think its safe to assume the numbers will come down dramatically if its ever looked at properly

Only if you can explain where the around 90k excess deaths in 2020 came from. Meteorite falling in the midlands maybe? It's nice of the other countries to collude with the government to hide it, isn't it, by also claiming excess deaths?

@FreshFreesias

Many people who have died have Covid reported on their death certificate when they actually died of something else.
Yes, becayse they have secondary causes,

So it can be the primary cause is say cancer, secondary Covid, but it is recorded in the Covid stats.
