Is doing the school-set homeschooling work mandatory? I would like to go my own way

Just that really! Will I or DC be penalised if we don’t do it and do other work instead? The school set work isn’t engaging enough and causes too much drama.

Talk to the school but don’t put it like that! We’ve gone our own way. School are on board. We do some of the set work plus our own projects. I try to look at the learning objectives from school and make sure we meet them in some way, and provide video and photo evidence of learning.

Haha - I won’t put it like that to them. I really really like the school! And I think they’re doing a great job. I’m just not it works as well at home as something else could.

That’s great advice about looking at the learning objectives etc, and provide evidence of learning.

Talk to the teacher? Depending on the reason why, if you totally ditch the work set by the teacher and do something else, I think it's very disrespectful to the teacher who has planned all the work. But if you can have mutual agreement, it won't be the case.
I would at least speak to the teacher and try to come up with solution before I would go my own way.

I definitely don’t want to be disrespectful. I like the teacher and the school a lot.

At 5, I don't think children would be penalised for not finishing work set. But still, communication with the teacher is important so they know what's going on.

DD is 6, in year 1. We are doing the set phonics and maths work in the morning, then we are supposed to do writing workshop based on a story they have videoed and an art or science or PHSE piece of work in the afternoon. We don't always (often) do things based on the story not least because the video quality is crap. Teachers seem perfectly happy to accept writing about penguins (science) or the place we went on holiday (geography) or whatever.

In year 1 here too. Thank you all! I will message the teacher today and see what she says and hope she approves!
