70+ dad - apprehensive about the vaccine

They have now rolled out the vaccine for 70+. My father is 70+, we'd like him to get the vaccine but he is really apprehensive. worried about side effects I think. Is there anyone he can talk to and ask questions? Are they all getting Pfizer vaccine?

If you know anyone who got the vaccine recently, please can you share their experience?

I had the Pfizer before Xmas. Health care worker. No side effects. Check out the NHS inform pages online. Millions and millions of people now around the world have had this vaccine. He will be fine.
And if he got Covid, the illness itself is truly dreadful.

Nonamesavail · 18/01/2021 19:22

2 people i care for age 90 had Pfizer last week. Neither had side effects.
I Had Pfizer yesterday no side effects so far

PuzzledObserver · 18/01/2021 19:23

Both vaccines are being used - he won’t know which it is until he gets there, and there won’t be a choice.

Both vaccines have been passed as safe.

Millions of people have had one or other vaccine so far, how many reports of problems have you heard? I don’t mean sore arm (to be expected), or feeling a bit rubbish for a day or two (fairly common), I mean serious adverse consequences from having the vaccine?

Precisely - there haven’t been any. Whereas the risk of death among people over 70 who contract Covid is something like 10%.

He should have it.

I notice you say 'we'd like'

If he decides he doesnt want it what then? Will you respect his decision?

Popfan · 18/01/2021 20:51

My 81 year old dad had the Pfizer nearly 2 weeks ago. He had no side effects, not even a sore arm.

R2221 · 19/01/2021 01:34

@Hairwizard yes, we will.

My mum has hers on Saturday - she's 81 and neurotic as they come about anything health related.

She's been absolutely fine - like Popfan's dad she had the Pfizer and didn't have any after effects at all.

I took her to the surgery to have it (not our own GP) and it was all very friendly and well organised.

FIL in his 80's had his 2nd Phizer early Jan and he had no reactions to either. Not even a sore arm.

Losttheequipment · 19/01/2021 03:04

I had it last week (Pfizer). Sore arm only. On the balance of probabilities, any side effect is likely to be a lot less unpleasant than getting covid (HCP - seen plenty enough to know how bad covid can be).

I'd rather die of taking a chance to live
Take your pick

Panicmode1 · 19/01/2021 03:17

My father is 73 and vulnerable as he has PMR and is on a high daily dose of steroids at the moment. He has his vaccine on Sunday and so far so good. Just a bit of a sore arm the day after. (He had the Pfizer one).

PerveenMistry · 19/01/2021 03:26

I had the Pfizer vaccine two weeks ago & feel nothing but abject gratitude.

What on earth is he worried about?!

rawlikesushi · 19/01/2021 05:40

Tell him to get out of the way so someone more appreciative can have it then.

Nonamesavail · 19/01/2021 07:33

My sore arm has gone now. He will be fine.

FippertyGibbett · 19/01/2021 07:34

My 75 year old mum had it. No problems, just a slightly achy arm next day.
She said that it was no different to having her flu jab.

Neenan · 19/01/2021 19:12

My mum 84 had hers two weeks ago, absolutely no I’ll effects. Hers was Pfizer too.

BornOnThe4thJuly · 19/01/2021 19:18

This is a shitty thing to say about an elderly person who’s concerned! How is he in anyone’s way?
MadisonMontgomery · 19/01/2021 19:20

I work in a GP practice, I have had the vaccine, as have all of my colleagues - no side effects except a sore arm for 24 hours. We have nearly vaccinated all our 80+ patients and as yet I haven’t heard of any of them having any side effects.
