Place your bets- overseas holidays

DH wants to book a holiday.

Trying to anticipate when it might be possible.

Is October likely do we think?

I’d like to take my daughter before she goes to university but I think August will be too early in terms of restrictions being lifted.

Well, last year, this all hit in March and people went abroad in the summer. This year it's hit earlier and we have a vaccine in sight, but the government may arguably be more reluctant to allow foreign travel sooner. My guess would be July, if I were actually placing bets, but nothing would actually surprise me!
I hasten to add that I won't be going abroad in July even if it is allowed, but then I rarely go abroad anyway.

Summerflowers101 · 18/01/2021 12:24

Last year you could go abroad in July.

JS87 · 18/01/2021 12:26

Depends if you have a spare ten days to isolate when you come back? I think it might be a while before travel restrictions such as quarantine are eased unless the rest of the world has vaccinated a similar proportion of their population to us. They may alternatively introduce vaccine passports but I think the closure of travel corridors due to the risk of new variants may be here for some time.
I'd say 2022 would be a safer bet.

zafferana · 18/01/2021 12:29

Well Dominic Raab has said it's too early for people to book foreign holidays for this summer (see below), but I reckon that yes, summer holidays will be able to go ahead. What is difficult to predict though is WHERE they'll be allowed. Some countries are making a complete hash of vaccinating their populations (France), others are vulnerable to mutant varieties of the virus (Portugal), so if you book something you risk that country being on the naughty list. I'd wait, personally.

2022, possibly!

Foreign travel has always been allowed.

HostaFireAndIce · 18/01/2021 12:40

Foreign travel has always been allowed.

Yes, sorry, that wasn't what I meant. I meant to lift restrictions to such an extent that holidays abroad would be possible and appealingly free of hassle. You are not currently allowed to jet off to Spain for a week's holiday.

Yes that’s what I mean too. Thank you.

We did a uk holiday in July as didn’t feel comfortable flying.

I’m thinking about when realistically will we be able to go on holiday “normally”.

I could quarantine on return as I’ll be on maternity leave anyway and DH could work his diary to do the same.

I’m hoping to go away Easter

I’ve not booked so will just go wherever is easiest - testing wise

With 5 day isolation release it’ll be much easier to manage as two one week holiday and one week isolation

PaigeMatthews · 18/01/2021 12:45

We are taking the bet. We have booked for august allowing me a d the children to quarantine for two weeks and dh to work from home if needed.

Ooft, Easter feels ambitious! You’re braver than me 😂

I'd not risk it this year. We may be vaccinated by the end of the summer, but don't know when other countries are going to be done

Pastanred · 18/01/2021 12:48

🤣 I really think it’s possible!

Last time the couple of months following lockdown were the lowest months case wise so on that basis April and may be safer bet than summer when the lockdown has been lifted for longer and cases have had time to rise

That’s my thinking!

smogsville · 18/01/2021 12:50

Someone on radio this morning was talking about a vaccine being offered to all 'adults' (so presumably that means 18+) by June. So that would make July-Aug trips feasible insofar as we'd all have a 'vaccine passport' or whatever is required. We're meant to be going to France, will postpone to the following year if necessary.

Trauchled · 18/01/2021 12:52

As much as I'd love to have a holiday abroad again I don't think I'd be booking anything until 2022.
I think we need to see how other countries are rolling out their vaccine programme and what restrictions may or may not still be in place.
I certainly don't want to have to take a PCR test overseas before I can return to the UK.

Lemons1571 · 18/01/2021 13:05

I’ve booked France for august, fully refundable if it can’t go ahead. We can isolate for 10 days on return if necessary. But I can’t think that all summer holidays will be cancelled again. I’m sure they’ll find a way, particularly for the main destinations like France Spain Greece

Verite1 · 18/01/2021 13:41

We have booked for May half term and mid August. Obviously more hopeful for the august one. Both were a case of transferring deposits/vouchers from year before so had to use them. But will be able to transfer May one again if no chance. don’t want to write it off yet but have to decide by mid March whether to pay balance.

Hobbesmanc · 18/01/2021 14:06

Booked for Greece for June. We went last year as soon as the corridors opened. Also rebooked long haul trip for November. But I'm always hopelessly optimistic

MsMiaWallace · 18/01/2021 14:08

We've booked Greece for 1st July.
Fingers crossed we'll be ok

movingonup20 · 18/01/2021 14:20

We are going early September, might be a good option for you - check term start dates

sundowners · 18/01/2021 14:28

If you book an airline that 100% lets you change for a refund or travel voucher- as well a hotel or villa that again gives you a full refund I dont see why people who want to shouldn't go ahead and book a holiday abroad for later summer.

Its a no brainer- if we can go- we will. Looks like majority of adults will be vaccinated by August. If we can't and vaccination not looking likely/or flights not allowed- I can cancel for free 28 days before.
The thought we have something booked I can dream about and look at gorgeous pictures of our accommodation and surroundings will keep me going till then!

TheExtraGuineaPig · 18/01/2021 14:47

We have a short break in Spain booked for Easter but I'm resigned to that not happening. I feel positive about summer though, I don't think we have to wait for everyone to be vaccinated before holidays start up again.

busface999 · 18/01/2021 16:28

I've got 10 nights in Spain booked for 5th April. It's been booked for a very long time! Not hopeful now. I've had my first dose of vaccine and am booked for my second end of March. I work front line. Husband will probably have had one dose by then, but not two. Agree with others, so hard to predict, particularly how other countries will fair with their vaccinations.

We are able to move it to new dates if needed, not sure how long we would push it back.
