Pfizer vaccine and second dose delay

sleepwouldbenice · 17/01/2021 18:26

A couple of weeks ago I was really pleased as my 83 year old dad had the Pfizer vaccine
Then of course they changed the dosage policy for the second jab from few weeks to c12 weeks. Something apparently Pfizer aren't happy with
I understand why they did it, to give greater protection to society as a whole, and quicker.
But I can't help feeling really worried that he won't have sufficient protection in the medium to longer term and therefore could fall foul of covid despite all his efforts over the last year.
Mentally I need to be able to look forward to a time of normality
Thoughts and facts welcome

I think he should continue to be extremely careful until after the second dose.

Someone posted a good link on another thread to BBC Future Covid 19.

He should still take all precautions . Everyone should.

Hi yes don't worry he will. But my point is we don't know if the spaced out dosage gives the c95% protection suggèsted do we?

OP, I think the short answer is that no one really knows yet whether the Government's massive gamble of delaying second doses in favour of getting more first doses done will pay off. My understanding is that the Pfizer trials were conducted on the basis of a 21 day gap between doses and not any other interval, which is why Pfizer themselves have expressed concern at delaying the second dose.

That is very true @sleepwouldbenice.

Try not too , @sleepwouldbenice. Make sure you and your family and Dad keep your immune system healthy in other ways with a balanced diet , take Vitamin D .
Continue all the other precautions.

Thanks for your thoughts

Like most people I just need to be able to look forward to a future as close to normal as possible, even if many months away

I know any illness could be a risk at that age, but hoped to be able to put this one behind us sometime

Double check his appointment details, dp's dms dr is still booking at 3 weeks. Seems to vary depending on the surgery
