Can anyone talk some sense into me

My DS has had a temperature tonight, and was sick once. He has had calpol and neurofen and temperature has come down, he is fast asleep next to me. He is 3, and has been to nursery this week for three mornings.

We live with my parents and my DH. My DM has just had. A random coughing fit downstairs, she's stopped now.

I can't stop thinking that the whole house has covid. Have booked my son a test for the morning. If he does have it, is there a good chance that everyone in the house will get better? I suffer with anxiety terribly whenever my children get ill, I'm so so so so worried.

DM is 66 with milk asthma, DD 65

This is the first week my DS has attended nursery as I've started back at work following maternity leave.

I hope your DS feels better soon. The temp coming down is a good sign. I'm sure your mum just swallowed something the wrong way but wait for the test and isolate as if you have it, to be on the safe side.

I mean it could be or just any other childhood illness. It's impossible to tell without a test. Would you be worried about your parents getting a cold or flu? I know that it's not the same thing and for some people it's worrying, but for most people it's a fairly mild illness and they will recover fine. It freaked me out when my parents of a similar age had it but they have recovered brilliantly. Xx

Most people have mild symptoms and recover. Good idea to get a test.
My DD had it at Christmas and is fine now and not everyone in the house got it
I know that's not the case for everyone but try not to worry too much until you have the results. However, on the off chance he does - just be extra careful, wash hands, social distance, etc.

I know how worrying it must be, covid is serious but remember that the overwhelming majority of people fully recover. Even in the 60-69 age range only about 1 in 1000 will die. I hope your DS feels better soon. It affects kids really mildly, my household had it and I was quite poorly but my toddler sailed through it.

Wolfiefan · 16/01/2021 22:34

Sick once wouldn’t make me think COVID.
Or one fit of coughing.
Hope the test is negative. But even if it isn’t the chances of everyone recovering well are high. No one you live with is really elderly or been told to shield. So not high risk.

Pinkchocolate · 16/01/2021 22:36

I’ve heard lots of households where only one member has tested positive so don’t worry too much that all of you will have it. It’s impossible to know without testing but try and stay calm. Most children are fine so try and put it in perspective. I’ve learnt that with Covid you really have to take each hour, each day at a time. As long as everyone is ok now, you’re good. Tomorrow you’ll check again and if you need to you seek advice. Help is there if you need it so you’re not alone.

ConfusedcomMum · 16/01/2021 22:45

Hopefully it's not covid however this was the only symptom my 3 year old had a month ago and he tested positive. He did have it mildly though.

hermionieweasley · 16/01/2021 23:08

How was the rest of your household?

Unfortunately we did all get it eventually one by one but we were mixing with each other as usual. We all got it mildly even though I am asthmatic and recovered within 8 days. In your case, as you can't really isolate a 3 year old, I would be asking the elderly parents to isolate instead if possible.
I did use a oximeter and thermometer everyday to check on everyone, rested near an open window for fresh air and drunk lots of cooled boiled water to flush the virus out. Also vitamin c with zinc lozenges for the throat. There have been Videos circulating on WhatsApp saying if you think you've been in contact with a positive case then to do salt gargles and nasal washes to reduce viral load but I don't know if this is truly works.

Thanks all. It's all less scary in the day light. He was very poorly in March last year and taken to hospital when my second son was a week old, I couldn't go with him in the ambulance or to the hospital and it bought back those memories last night.

He's much brighter this morning and eating, but still has a temp, still snuffy and runny nose. I have booked a postal test so that he's not to weirded out by all the people in Ppe at the test sites.

My neighbours son tested positive after one episode of vomiting and a brief high temperature. I think you're right to test.
