New variant - symptoms less severe??

Hello all

We have all been struck down with covid 19

Was talking to a nurse on the phone earlier and she claims that many who have recently tested positive have milder symptoms and are sick for a shorter time with new variant
Could this be correct?
She seemed quite adamant !!?

It’s not something I’ve come across, as far as I know the only difference new variant is spreading faster/more easily.

It would be great if what the nurse told you was true but it’s not something I’ve come across anywhere else.

dublingirl66 · 16/01/2021 19:16

Ok

I think so
Guess t is too early to say

Would be good if it was true, but haven’t heard this anywhere

Spiratedaway · 16/01/2021 19:21

My SIL icu nurse I remember her telling me at the beginning that she hoped it would mutate to become weaker like virus do so hope it does

dublingirl66 · 16/01/2021 19:22

Maybe I'm just trying to cling to this hope

Maybe nurse was hopeful too

We shall see
Love to everyone who has had or currently have this

Roll on feeling good again xxxxxxx

High proportions of people get mild symptoms as the cases get higher and higher so will the amount of people with mild symptoms.

ivykaty44 · 16/01/2021 19:26

My Dd got sick on the Sunday, by Wednesday /Thursday struggling with breathing, but part of this was panick. Calmed the panick and breathing improved. Started to feel better by Saturday & much more chipper Monday. Still tired but back walking 5 miles a day.

Her friend also got it, but she was not really sick, very mild and her day was asymptotic

Kitcat122 · 16/01/2021 19:26

My Sil doctor says lots of young adults in icu. 🤷‍♀️

ivykaty44 · 16/01/2021 19:27

@Kitcat122 Have this young people all free from underlying conditions?

Ah I see
Gosh it really is hell for many age groups xx

MushMonster · 16/01/2021 19:32

All people I know off with it had almost no symptoms or mild. Wphat they described soinded milder that what we had back in February last year.
Fingers crossed, it will be milder and milder.
Still, due to the sheer numbers infected, they are seeing more and more patients, and more in the younger groupsSad
I cannot wait till we get the vaccine!

User158340 · 16/01/2021 19:33

Maybe an element of herd immunity in that a lot of people already have antibodies from last year so get it more mildly.

dublingirl66 · 16/01/2021 19:34

Interesting!!
Roll on getting back to normal (some kind of normal)

In our hospital there is more patients now than there was in first wave.

soundofsilence1 · 16/01/2021 19:51

I think people who are currently being diagnosed and having mild symptoms were not being diagnosed at all in the first wave and may not have realised they were positive. As far as I can understand there is no evidence that this wave is more or less severe than the first.

SophieB100 · 16/01/2021 20:06

I hope you feel better soon.
Hopefully, regardless of what variant you have, you will be like the overwhelming percentage of people who have a mild case.
However, I don't think the new variant is weaker, because if it was, with it being the prevalent strain, our NHS wouldn't be at capacity, which it clearly is.

PuzzledObserver · 16/01/2021 20:09

Whitty said there was nothing to indicate that the disease course or severity was different, only the transmissibility. That may change with more cases, of course.

dublingirl66 · 16/01/2021 20:11

Interesting

Yes so very true
Thank you all
Please be really careful
My home town has been hit badly 😢😢😢😢

Your nurse friend is unlikely to know what patients are presenting with what strain of the virus so is unlikely t this point to be able to say. However I am sure Dr are reporting that the new strain my last longer with people being hospitalised later on.

dublingirl66 · 16/01/2021 22:10

She is not a nurse friend

It was a nurse at an out of hours doctors service who was taking the calls

OP posts:
dublingirl66 · 16/01/2021 22:11

And it does appear that not enough research or info available at the min
Was just wondering why she may have said this

OP posts:
Kitcat122 · 16/01/2021 23:06

@Ivykaty44 her message to me was "Stay safe we are seeing many, many more young adults in itu with no underlying health conditions". She is a London hospital doc.

LickEmbysmiling · 16/01/2021 23:11

Op, she won't have any special knowledge, I'm sure she's not done an in depth study, however... I hope she is right.
