Vaccine and alcohol

Has anyone heard anything about the vaccines being negatively affected by alcohol? It was mentioned in a prog we watched recently that any amount of alcohol may reduce its effectiveness. So why if this is the case aren't we told?! I drink a small glass of wine a night (and no more) and thought oh shit!! Shock

I heard this and avoided alcohol for a week before and after mine. Not sure how much evidence but thought it couldn’t hurt!

ChasingRainbows19 · 16/01/2021 13:24

I had mine yesterday, no info given on alcohol but alcohol can affect your immune system. Then I read this last night:

www.drinkaware.co.uk/professionals/press/drinkaware-issues-advice-on-alcohol-and-the-covid-19-vaccine

I only have a couple of drinks one day a week at the minute but I’ll stay off for a couple of weeks. I want it to work the best it can!

Mediumred · 16/01/2021 13:29

Hmm, I saw this piece in the Sun (so not exactly the Lancet) and it quotes Drinkaware rather than COVID experts but I suppose the advice to avoid alcohol for two days before and two weeks after the jab can’t hurt (I say this as someone who will miss booze for two weeks!). For those who have had the jab, were you given any advice at your appointment or beforehand?

ChasingRainbows19 · 16/01/2021 13:33

@Mediumred it’s on none of the leaflets I read.
I’m happy to abstain for a week or two I don’t drink much anyway. It makes sense when it’s known alcohol intake can affect immunity. Not sure what effect how much a small intake has tbh and I’m sure others are more knowledgeable.

My mum is booked in for hers next week she has been told not to drink alcohol for the few days before and after, fortunately she's doing dry January anyway so it isn't an issue

BooseysMom · 16/01/2021 13:51

I can't believe this.. we weren't told this and we're NHS front line!! To think that now the vaccine may be less effective as a result...something i could have done with knowing before Shock

Russia are advising avoiding alcohol for three months after vaccine and theirs is similar to the Astra Zeneca jab. BUT that might also be their health authorities using the opportunity to get people to reduce consumption. I read that alcohol does put an extra burden on the immune system. I dint understand how the immune system works but if the liver, spleen and kidneys play a role I guess this makes sense

Splodgetastic · 16/01/2021 13:58

Sorry, Russia says two weeks before and six weeks after (not sure whether it’s one or two doses) www.reuters.com/article/health-coronavirus-russia-vaccine-alcoho/dont-mix-sputnik-vaccine-with-alcohol-says-russian-official-some-recoil-idUSKBN28J239

Splodgetastic · 16/01/2021 13:59

It’s two doses three weeks apart so two weeks then three weeks then another six weeks.

LizzieMacQueen · 16/01/2021 14:05

OMG Nicola Sturgeon is going to love this ....any excuse to batter us. Have you seen the stuff they put out for Health guidance up here?

Bugger. I had a G&T and a glass of wine last night and my vaccine this morning. Grin

I’m having difficulty believing this is really an issue unless you’re a really heavy drinker.

Splodgetastic · 16/01/2021 14:33

@WiseUpJanetWeiss The developer of the Russian vaccine himself said a small glass of wine was okay so maybe you’re right.

mrsed1987 · 16/01/2021 14:33

Had mine thursday, no info re alcohol, had a jd and Coke last night 👍

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 16/01/2021 14:45

Good to know. I suppose I'll abstain from the day I get my appointment until 2/3 weeks afterwards

SaskiaRembrandt · 16/01/2021 14:55

From the link above:

'While there is little data about the specific effect of alcohol on the human body's response to the Covid-19 vaccination, there is some evidence that drinking alcohol, especially regular heavy drinking, can reduce your body’s ability to build immunity in response.'

In other words, there is no evidence that a glass of wine will make any difference, but if you're a heavy drinker it's a good idea to give up whether you're being vaccinated or not. So, no change from what we already knew.

😆

@SaskiaRembrandt.. thank you. That's a relief
