Has anyone heard? BBC flashed something up but no real detail.
Apolgies if there's already a thread on this, I couldn't see one.

My worry is the vaccine is not affective against this strain and can’t keep it out forever

JanuaryChill · 14/01/2021 17:51

@weepingwillow22 well yes but there are other high transmission countries, eg Iran, Spain? I don't know, am speculating.

The picture is different if you look at cases per million v cases overall. With former U.K., Brazil and SA not as high up

I honestly think they are using these variants get us to not drop our guard during the vaccine process... Every report on them the headline says the vaccine may not work and they you read it and at the end it says... However most scientists believe the vaccine will still work.

WhoWants2Know · 14/01/2021 18:28

I thought I had read that the Brazilian variant was initially sequenced in Japan, and traced to a traveler from Brazil,

In addition to the thread by Bill Hanage, which coffeeandcroissants posted.

This is excellent from Trevor Bedford

That forbes article is interestestinf but quite general, about virus mutations.
Does no one else think it really odd that the national news never said "new virus mutation identified"?

OP posts:
MrsShelton · 14/01/2021 21:19

its not a mutation though, hence it not being called that

do you mean its a move to minimise impact?

StealthPolarBear · 14/01/2021 21:23

Ah that might explain it, I didn't know there was a difference thanks
No not really. I'm not into conspiracy theories (other than the moon landings, do they think we're idiots :o), I just don't get why some things are big news and others barely warrant a mention, or in this case only get mentioned for the first time as part of another news story!

DH is in Argentina, they stopped flights from uk a while ago due to concerns over the new strain here. They haven't had it too bad over there. The financial impact will do more damage longterm than the virus. He was supposed to be flying back in Feb.

If the new variant in Brazil, South America, Portugal and Maderia (?) is not susceptible to the vaccine the financial impact of letting it spread will be enormous if they have to revaccinate people already vaccinated after reformulating the vaccine.
MaxNormal · 14/01/2021 21:39

Although there is little evidence to suggest this is an issue with the variants detected in the UK, South Africa and Brazil, immunologists fear further mutations.

MrsShelton · 14/01/2021 21:41

How safe would it be health wise to be vaccinated against all these variants?

ssd · 14/01/2021 21:42

God it gets worse and worse

I'll need to come off mn for a bit. And stick my head in the sand. ignorance is bliss...

I think it would be safe. I think they are saying to leave a 1 month gap between the flu vaccine and Covid-19 vaccine. But babies get masses of vaccinations, as do travellers to certain areas.
stuckhereontheinside · 14/01/2021 22:16

But it puts back vaccination programmes by weeks/months in development, then repeat manufacture, repeat distribution, repeat administration. More lockdown. More financial hit. More societal damage.
Probably not worth the risk so a infinitesimal tiny minority can continue to fly around the world unrestricted.

MaxNormal · 14/01/2021 22:16

The link and quote I posted does say that there's little concern about any of these variants and the current vaccines. Of course it might and possibly will happen in the future but I don't think its worth everyone getting upset over at this stage.

3asAbird · 14/01/2021 22:24

In puzzled by Portugal whys it banned and neighbouring Spain is not.
I know Portugal Brazil same language but geographically far apart.

MaxNormal · 14/01/2021 22:29

Because there's still a lot of movement between Brazil and Portugal.
Mind you it would be easy enough for anyone to fly in from Spain instead!

Maybe the Brazilian variant has been found in Portugal?

@waitrosetrollydolly

( misses the point, so backs away slowly )
