Door to door window salesmen - can this possibly be allowed?

Just had a door to door window salesman round, who was quite rude when I told him to sling his hook.

Rights and wrongs of opening my front door at all aside, is this actually legal currently? There's nothing specifically banning it in the guidelines but nothing obviously permitting it either. Are they using"construction" as a loophole maybe?

Phoned police, they've logged it as a "suspicious incident" but they weren't sure either (however I do not live in Derbyshire). If it is permitted I want to write to my MP querying this but I don't want to look like an idiot if it's already illegal so would welcome advice.

Bloody hell, if it is allowed it is utterly ridiculous.

Could have just been a dodgy type - there's other reasons to maybe think so. But would be good if the police had clearer guidance at least

I had dogs trust knock before Christmas! Shocked me as I was opening the door to go to the car and literally came face to face with him - he was wearing a shield. I was far from impressed! Didn’t report it as actually felt sorry for the chap having to be out doing that kind of work during these times. Door to door salesmen should definitely not be out at the moment.
