Footballers and their precious group hugs

Why can't they just stop doing it? They can score a goal and celebrate without piling on top of each other, surely? Hmm

Why are the Premier League clubs making such an effing fuss about these overpaid darlings and insisting they MUST be allowed to hug and break Covid rules?! Even though they've been asked not to, many times!

It's ridiculous. When amateur sport was allowed, they weren't allowed to do all this, and they care about their sport too - why on earth should bring paid a fortune make you less able to control yourself than anyone else?

HelloThereMeHearties · 14/01/2021 10:24

Exactly. It seems the managers are as much prima donnas as the players! Angry

Anyway, top league football will be banned if the don't stop, and of course they'll blame the govt somehow but it will serve them right.

I don’t think their cuddles are that unsafe given that they’re tested to within an inch of their life. However, it’s not hard to stop doing it - so they should just stop doing it.

Eaumyword · 14/01/2021 10:52

Grin at cuddles but yes to all of the above.

Calmandmeasured1 · 14/01/2021 11:01

I would have said it is okay because they are in their training bubbles. However, games have been postponed because of outbreaks so clearly something is going wrong with precautions. It seems stupid to hug in the circumstances.

Alicetheowl · 14/01/2021 11:11

I sort of agree but apart from the goalkeepers they have been running up to each other breathing hard and getting close enough to tackle or foul each other (and they do this in training games presumably with their own players) so I can't see that once or twice a game doing this would make a huge difference.

puffinkoala · 14/01/2021 11:13

They're paid ££££££ - they can flippin well stop hugging as far as I am concerned!

It's pathetic.

EffIt · 14/01/2021 11:19

They're tested a few times a week so I suppose that along with the fact they are often in close proximity with training, travelling & playing that celebrating a goal isn't going to make much difference.

Which clubs are insisting the players should be allowed to hug @hellotheremehearties?

And spitting too. Disgusting.
CalmDownBoris72 · 14/01/2021 11:40

I think that given how many restrictions the whole country is living under it would be good if footballers could hold off on the hugs for a bit.

I know they are tested etc. but I’m sure they’ll manage like the rest of us have to!

Holyshitinapyrexdish · 14/01/2021 12:01

Apparently Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (manager of some football club) has said that football is an emotional game.. yeah well my husbands nan was probably feeling fucking emotional knowing she was probably going to die on Monday without any of her family with her. These overpaid, self important asshats need to be told to follow the same fucking rules that the rest of the country are being told to follow. But no they’re far too important. They earn millions a year so obviously they don’t NEED to follow the same laws as the rest of us plebs. Sorry for the rant but watching my DH grieving for his nan and having to watch football idiots bleating about how fucking hard done by they are cos empty stadiums and no hugging. Boo fucking hoo

Rainb0wDrops · 14/01/2021 12:05

Completely agree. I don't care if they're being tested and in bubbles they can and should still set an example to the fans watching them.
The rest of the country are having to make sacrifices. This is a really small one to make in the grand scheme of things.

Yohoheaveho · 14/01/2021 12:09

Because it's the beautiful game sacred sacrosanct religion no one is allowed to speak against it or some bulshit🙄
Overpaid precious and dumb as rocks 🙄

AlandAnna · 14/01/2021 12:51

Blood bloils at this. As for the Dubai trip.
Send them all to help out in ICU for a couple of weeks since they are so godlike Angry

I was once blasted as being condescending by saying ‘at last, a footballer you can respect’ with regard to Marcus Rashford.

I don’t think I was that far off?!

FallenSky · 14/01/2021 13:00

I was having this discussion with DH last night while watching a match. It's not so much that there's a massively increased risk with them hugging it's more the image they're putting out as well. Plus it's very difficult to keep away from someone completely on a football field but during a game something like standing shoulder to shoulder for a free kick is somewhat essential, hugging after a goal is absolutely not. They should be minimising the risk at every given opportunity. Especially as there have been so many postponements and outbreaks recently, it really isn't doing much for their PR.

HelloThereMeHearties · 14/01/2021 13:01

Which clubs are insisting the players should be allowed to hug @hellotheremehearties?

The ones that aren't insisting their players follow the rules and are making excuses for them. Apparently it's reeeeeeeally reeeeeeeeeally hard for them not to hug when they score a goal Hmm Don't know how on earth they managed for decades before it all started in the eighties...

What has how much they earn got to do with anything?

Personally I think if they have spent hours every day training together, changing, showering, working together then it probably makes very little difference whether they hug or high five when they celebrate a goal.

LaceyBetty · 14/01/2021 13:11

It is so outrageously pathetic. It drives me mad seeing it. So entitled.

Catsneezies · 14/01/2021 13:15

It is not a good role model. It really isn't that hard not to hug each other.

I wonder if they are using the inaccurate lateral flow tests or the PCR ones?

Mintypylonsfryingsurplus · 14/01/2021 13:20

They were asking for vaccinations too....why are we all enabling these people

Eaumyword · 14/01/2021 13:30

Ooh super, that's great if they are asking for vaccinations. Then they can volunteer with the vaccination programme as Covid stewards etc...Hmm Tells me that won't happen!
That really would be a travesty if they jumped the queue whilst working in a completely non-essential capacity. It would be literally wrestling a vaccine from an 80yr old!Confused
It is all such a bad example to set and behaviour like this comes across as elitist and very arrogant.

HelloThereMeHearties · 14/01/2021 13:31

They can train at a distance. And I doubt very much that they shower and work together.

The point is, as PPs have said, it's not just about the danger of them passing on the virus in close quarters - it's how it looks, especially to youngsters. Also, they've been told not to, but that they are far too important to obey the rules the rest of us try to follow Hmm

They could all do a little socially distanced dance instead. Like the Macarena.
