If you have children/caring responsibilities/work, how many times a day are you having to leave the house?

Just curious!

Yesterday was the kind of awkward day where DH's shifts meant he couldn't help out, so I ended up leaving the house so many times.

Took DS to nursery
Took older DD for a brief half an hour walk around the block after school work
Took DD later to the childminder (keyworker care, seems safer to spend a few hours there when needed than be in school)
Popped to the supermarket quickly after that (delivery slots are rare as hen's teeth round here)
Collected DS and DD from childcare

I'd have loved to have been able to go for a run in the evening too, but realised I'd already been out loads!

It would be great to try and keep to the once a day rule, but with children, no home deliveries and DH working out the house it's proving really difficult...

How is everyone else doing?

Minimum of twice a day for pick up/drop off
Sometimes an evening walk and/or pop to the supermarket.

Minimum twice a day maximum four times a day I'd say.

pointedpepper · 14/01/2021 10:11

Rarely more than twice a day. When DD is at nursery I go out for pick up/drop off, and I tend to schedule any supermarket/pharmacy visits straight after drop off. We get our main supermarket shop delivered weekly and generally don't need to top up (I book a slot about 4 weeks ahead). When DD isn't at nursery we go out once a day to a park, although we'll often stay out from morning until her afternoon nap, then we don't go out again for the rest of the day, mainly because it gets cold/dark so early.

I am not particularly trying to limit the number of times we go outside tbh, I just like to get all my errands done in one go, and when I'm home for the day I change into my comfy clothes so I can't be bothered to go out again.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/01/2021 11:18

The once a day 'rule' is only for exercise and its only a guideline.

Plus all those trips were necessary and going out for an evening run would not have increased the risk of spreading the virus.

I WFH and have no DC but still often go out several times a day, for essential shopping, for a run and to deliver shopping and take dogs from 2 different households for walks as their owners are shielding and/or post operation so can't do it themselves.

You can go out as much as you need to, providing you have a 'reasonable excuse' and as long as you're not in close proximity to other people, the risk of transmission is negligible anyway.

4 times a day just for school runs.

UglyHoose · 14/01/2021 11:42

I try and combine things if I can, so will stop off at the supermarket / petrol station on the way home from work etc but sometimes you just have to go out.

puffinkoala · 14/01/2021 11:43

Yes once a day is only for exercise. Nothing to stop you going out for a run, cycling to and from work (except the weather!) and then taking a neighbour's dog for a walk!

Megan2018 · 14/01/2021 11:54

On working weekdays:
I take DD to nursery in the morning (DH collects)
I go for a short lunchtime walk in our tiny village if I can
I go to the stables (have to drive there) in the evening to take care of my horse. Animal care is permitted-someone else does the morning for me. I’m as quick as I can, about an hour inc travel.

We get online shopping for food but I might occasionally have to get a few bits which are combined with nursery run or stables where possible. Once or twice I’ve nipped to village post box too.

Weekends:
Drive to stables twice a day where I also ride (rural, hardly see anyone and no-one is daft enough to get close).
Family walk (DH and DD) if we can - includes a short drive if we want to go to local park as no pavement to walk there.
Top up shop if desperate (have to drive there)

I don’t work Monday’s and try to do just one longish walk/park outing with DD and then evening drive to horse. But this week I had to do bank and post office too-but that’s not frequent as I do as much as poss online.

Thurlow · 14/01/2021 12:28

I guess they all are essential and I do try to combine wherever I can. It just feels like I'm out so much more this lockdown!

Twice a day, nursery drop-off and pickup. If I need shopping I go after drop-off, but that's only once a week or so.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/01/2021 12:45

Twice a day in the week. I drop DS to school then I go to work out of the home.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 14/01/2021 13:21

Once a day for a walk. Low density area, see few people.
Once a week, we drive to a supermarket for our weekly shop at a quiet time.
Sometimes the daily walk includes popping into a shop for something fresh.

We seem to be in a minority.

lljkk · 14/01/2021 14:33

Probably works out at 2-3x/daily for me. In April I probably went out more often because weather was nicer & I got DC out for a lot more exercise.

volunteering: 3x/week
exercise by myself: once daily
getting DC to exercise: typically 2-3x/week
accompanying DS to his job (he talks to me & we get some exercise): 2x/week
other errands: typically 6x/week? Yesterday was 1 outing to dentist-post office-selling something ; tonite I'll go see a friend who is feeling low (bubble!) & lives alone; I would suggest a walk outside but weather is awful

I don't do big supermarket shops bec DH does those.

movingonup20 · 14/01/2021 15:00

I leave the house 2-3 times a week. Only place I'm going is the supermarket and perhaps a walk (or combine the two) I'm so bored

IndecentFeminist · 14/01/2021 16:14

During my working weeks all the kids and I will walk to school and back at the end of the day. Then we will probably take dog for a walk. A food delivery once a week, might have to pop to shop at some point, or drop something to parents etc.

Alfaix · 14/01/2021 16:26

Once, if that. I go to work and come home again 3 times a week. DH takes DS to school and picks him up on those days so twice, plus a lunchtime run if fine. We go for a walk or play at the park once on days when I’m not working except if weather rubbish.
I bought a delivery pass in the summer lull so Asda delivery. DH delivers food to his mum at the weekend or she comes here (support bubble). We walk to the village shop if we run out of anything.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 14/01/2021 16:27

I don't leave my house really...ever. No caring responsibilities but 4 kids and full-time job. All my shopping is delivered. And thank Christ I've a nanny this last 6 years so she does the homeschooling and 9-5 childcare. But it means I never leave the house😧 working -kids-sleep-kids-working-kids-sleep and so on....

Heatherjayne1972 · 14/01/2021 16:31

4 times a day. School run and work

trilbydoll · 14/01/2021 16:31

We are both wfh and dc aren't at school so I don't think I've been out this week - I went to Asda for a click and collect order on Saturday I think. It's cold and wet here so no-one is particularly bothered about leaving the house! We probably should make more effort to get some fresh air but it's really unappealing Blush

nannynick · 14/01/2021 16:33

5 times typically for weekday work day. That is 5 times leaving a house, not just my own home.
Weekend 2 times up to 4 times, depending what work I am doing and shopping needed.

LBOCS2 · 14/01/2021 16:37

None.

We wfh, and we aren't sure if we're eligible for a critical worker school place and don't need to argue the toss as we're both at home. I've booked our deliveries from Ocado for a month in advance.

DH takes the kids out for a walk daily, and I go for my own quiet, in my own head potter when I feel like it.

BlackeyedSusan · 14/01/2021 17:03

Once per day to take Ds to school. He walks home. If the weather is nice I walk near home. (Hypermobile, so don't go far) yesterday I went out three times. Once to school, once to take car to MOT, once to collect car) ex came to collect shopping as we do a joint delivery shop to protect DD.
