Your thoughts on when life will be normal-ish

I realise this is purely speculative but what are people's thoughts on when we will be back to a semi-normal reality? Knowing what you know on vaccinations, when, according to you, can we expect the most simple of things to be back up and running again? I am referring to the simplest of things such as getting people back to their offices/places of work, having shops/gyms/entertainment venues permanently open, and the like?

I know we are a long way away from normal as we know it and that it may take several years to go back to it so I am not talking to getting back to total normality - ie no masks, no social distance, no restrictions.

@Sirius99

After the last 2 days death numbers, I think people need to realise that we will be in lockdown for a while longer then in the high tier systems at least late summer early Autumn, i think people need to come to terms with this
Of course we won’t be in lockdown that long. The government know that the economy needs to get moving before then.

The deaths are from people who caught Covid weeks ago. They aren't indicative of the current case rate. Cases are falling now so deaths should start to fall very soon.

We are only getting one vaccination at the moment, which according to data is only 50% effective, The main reason people are getting uptight is the expectation of restrictions being lifted far earlier than they are going to be.

Links please to data that shows it's only 50% effective after both doses?
Sirius99 · 21/01/2021 09:12

I didn’t say both doses, people are only having one dose now and the next 3 months later, All the data suggests that after one dose is 50% effective 95% after 2 if given 2 weeks apart

thenewduchessofhastings · 21/01/2021 11:59

Well if all these people who are saying they won't get the vaccine don't then never;it's selfish to rely on others to reduce the number of cases;they'll soon be moaning when they end up with it.

Glastonbury has just been cancelled so there’s little sign of much to look forward to

LilyRose89 · 21/01/2021 13:05

I think the question is rather; how long do people who are not classified as 'vulnerable' will put up with the rules.
At one point not so far away from here (my psychological barrier is this summer), people will need to go back to seeing their friends and family and resuming a normal social life.
I became pregnant during the lockdown, I cancelled my wedding three times because of restrictions, my partner couldn't attend any pregnancy scan and I have been unable to see my parents and brother in France who haven't seen me pregnant at all (I had to share the news on the phone).
And I am amongst the very lucky ones.
I know that as soon as my baby is born in a couple months, I will need to resume social activities within caution. I will welcome my family and close friends into my home to meet the baby.
It's a risk/benefit ratio.

Sirius99 · 21/01/2021 13:37

LilyRose89 Good luck with your pregnancy, I’m sorry but we’re in a worldwide pandemic the first since 1918, unfortunately it’s happened during your pregnancy, don’t do anything silly think about your and your babies health

TheKeatingFive · 21/01/2021 13:39

I presume she and her baby are at very little risk from Covid.

Sirius99 · 21/01/2021 13:41

TheKeatingFive In the future

TheKeatingFive · 21/01/2021 13:43

They’ll still be at very little risk in the future.

Sirius99 · 21/01/2021 14:16

Tell that too the people of all ages that have died or need hospital treatment

The data quite clearly shows that under 45s with no existing health conditions are at relatively small risk from either.

Someone of my age and health background is at more risk from dying or hospitalisation from flu. I’ve never worried about that in my life.

Coming out of the initial stage of the pandemic, fear gives way to more rational and proportional response. Covid is a huge issue for a certain proportion of the population and for the health service. For many people like me, not so much.

Ultimately these people will not be prepared to lockdown forever and doing so will do them far more harm than Covid.

There will be enough of us that are happy to take our chances once the vulnerable are vaccinated. The amount of people that are my age and have died is tiny enough for me to be happy to take the risk. You stay home indefinitely if you want but you're mistaken if you think everyone else will.
Sirius99 · 21/01/2021 14:33

Sage are on the news today suggesting due to the R number lockdown might have to last till May

frozendaisy · 21/01/2021 14:42

Life will be "normalish" sometime between Easter 2021 and Christmas 2022.

Sirius99 · 21/01/2021 14:52

frozendaisy You would make a great politician with an answer like that

frozendaisy · 21/01/2021 14:58

I'd either be the best or worse politician ever!
