Oxford Vaccine - Any side-effects

wellyjellymelly · 13/01/2021 13:37

Before we start, not a goady or antivax in disguise post.

Anybody had the Oxford vaccine and had any side effects afterwards, such as flu like symptoms? Myself and other colleagues have had the jab and a few of us have been unwell since with severe body aches, fever etc. Anybody else?

Some people experience that after the flu jab so just wondered if anybody else had had this at all?

Isn't that part of the normal immune response?

If you've had the jab, I'm assuming you're a healthcare worker.

I'm interested in whether people with severe allergic reactions such as myself are going to be able to have this vaccine, since Pfizer is out. Does anyone know?

PatienceVirtue · 13/01/2021 13:42

I had either the Oxford vaccine or the meningitis placebo as part of the trial. I wasn't expecting any reaction but the next morning I felt really leaden and briefly had a high temperature. It stopped me going on a run but wouldn't have stopped me going into work.

I had no reaction at all after the booster dose three months later.

Possibly not very useful since it's only 50-50 the Oxford vaccine (fingers crossed!).

wellyjellymelly · 13/01/2021 13:44

Well yes it is part of the immune response, but this is to the extreme to the point I've been in bed for two days.

Not necessarily a health worker, shouldn't assume.

I think there are other threads on the Pzifer vaccine for you to look at for more info if you're concerned.

That's interesting, thank you. When will you find out if you were given the vaccine? This has been bad enough to keep me and others off work.

I had it yesterday and feel terrible. High temperature , headaches, body aching all over, really hoping it settles soon

Em777 · 13/01/2021 15:02

Symptoms like fevers, headaches, fatigue are quite common with the Oxford vaccine (and hopefully therefore to be expected). You can see the full safety stats from the MHRA in their detailed approval analysis on page 40-42 here:

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/949772/UKPAR_COVID_19_Vaccine_AstraZeneca_05.01.2021.pdf

53% of recipients will get a headache, 53% will get fatigue, 26% will get joint pain, 22% will get nausea, 31% chills, etc. Most of these symptoms are low grade.

Thansk, but I'm specifically interested in the Oxford vaccine as I can't have the Pfizer one
Helenj1977 · 13/01/2021 15:12

@PatienceVirtue I’m just curious, do you ever find out what you were given?

wellyjellymelly · 13/01/2021 15:14

@unebaguettepastropcuite ah I understand , might be an idea to start your own thread for more specific advise on your query in that case.

I had it on Saturday. Tender arm, headache and tired on Sunday despite no alcohol.
Not that bad though.

DueBabyMummy2B · 13/01/2021 17:59

Totally normal immune response from a vaccine.

Umbridge34 · 13/01/2021 18:14

I had the Oxford vaccine yesterday. Last night I woke up shivering and feverish and today I've felt like a train hit me all day. One of my colleagues who had it felt the same.

Patient info leaflet says 1 in 10 will experience flu like symptoms so its not that unusual.

I've advised my colleagues who haven't had it yet to try and book it for a day when they are off the next day.

wellyjellymelly · 13/01/2021 18:53

Looks like it's quite common in that case. Thanks everybody.

my colleagues have also had vomiting as a side effect, my temperature hasn’t been below 38.6c since last night, never reacted to a vaccine like this before

Tanfastic · 14/01/2021 03:47

I had it yesterday (Oxford one) I'm an NHS worker anc I I've woken up feeling terrible, hence coming on here in the middle of the night to see if anyone else is feeling rough. I feel shivery, sick and achy. If I still feel like this in the morning I can't see me going into work and I never have a day off.

AmongUs · 14/01/2021 04:47

Hope you feel better soon Tanfastic and others. Good to read these responses and prepare myself for what can happen post jab.
Tanfastic · 14/01/2021 05:01

Thank you, still awake. So grateful to have had it though and feel lucky to be one of the first. The relief is immense.

AmongUs · 14/01/2021 05:17

Hopefully it's just a 24 hour thing and you feel back to normal soon. Hope you manage to get a bit of sleep before you have to make a decision about work

LionLily · 14/01/2021 05:45

For balance, I had it yesterday morning and am absolutely fine. Not so much as a lump at the injection site. Hope those who are having side effects feel better today.

leafygarden42 · 14/01/2021 05:51

I had the Oxford vaccine on Monday (NHS worker) and have had a slightly sore arm - not even that sore to be honest. And that's it.

No fever/tiredness etc here.

Umbridge34 · 14/01/2021 09:14

Quick update. This morning I feel absolutely fine apart from a sore arm.

My colleague also said she feels ok today so seems like its a 24 hour thing with the fluey horrible feeling.

wellyjellymelly · 14/01/2021 10:23

Yes, I'm better now apart from a sore arm so short lived!

OP posts:
PatienceVirtue · 14/01/2021 10:29

So glad everyone's feeling better and that you made sure to come back and reassure.

In answer to the question as to if people on the trial find out, yes we can do. When we get called to have our vaccine by the NHS (I'm in my 50s so let's say in a few months' time), I call the trial people and they'll unblind me to let me know. I can continue to participate in the trial even after that though with my swabs etc. I can't remember but I think when I signed up it was for a 9 month trail which is only a month or so more.
