Because I've just been to tesco and brought a kettle. I've just had a bloke when I was stood in front to pay. Mumble about an 'essential kettle'

Did he know why I had to buy it. Did he plums!
It's not so I can go home and have a relaxing cuppa. Its so I can make formula for my baby. Because last night our kettle went bang!
We had to get hot water off the neighbour for this mornings bottle so I could then run to grab one.

What's essential to some isn't to others.

Yes I think there's prob a fine line but I wish people wouldn't judge

I wonder if a vibrator would be classed as essential. Quick google search shows they’re still available.

Thats a relief treasr Literally.

AliceMcK · 13/01/2021 14:02

Ignore him or next time give them the death stare. I get it all the time. Since my DD came off formula I have bought a tray of soya milk each week in my weekly shop as she’s allergic to dairy, it’s just easier pulling the whole tray off the shelf and putting it in the trolley. Before COVID no one batted an eye, now I’m constantly getting dirty looks like I’m stock piling or panic buying long life milk. I just look at them daring them to say something.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 14:02

@HoppingOnSteppingStones I don't think anyone meant long term but just for bottle or two you needed until you got kettle
Personally I would of got from amazon next day but thats just because I hate supermarkets even at the best of times

HoppingOnSteppingStones · 13/01/2021 14:03

My baby also has cmpa so on wysoy formula. Which I buy 4 a time of because they rarely have it. I feel your pain

Am I missing something; what’s the justification behind dental practices being inessential? Hmm We’re allowed to attend medical appointments including regular dental check ups.

The only reason they were closed during the first lockdown is because of a lack of PPE and the tools they use creating the risk of spray transmission & requiring a deep clean between clients, not because they were too inessential to open. They can safely operate now as they have provisions in place.

HoppingOnSteppingStones · 13/01/2021 14:05

Yeah I understand that. But honestly if it wasn't for the baby I would of ordered online.
Tesco is walking distance. I was in and out withing prob less than 6 mins.

Thinking about it I've not even had a cuppa yet!. Haha

Thing is, I don't believe for a second that anyone during this whole thing has only ever bought absolutely essential items. Unless they are literally living off bread and tap water then a lot of shopping is not technically essential to survival but I'm sure everyone has gone and done their shop like normal, added bars of chocolate, treats, drinks etc...

I couldn't care less what the person in front of me in Tesco is buying! I don't even notice or look! People are incredibly sad.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 13/01/2021 14:06

the only thing I want to know is how @Springersrock discovered her pony likes peppermint tea

I hadn't thought of that?

What did you do @Springersrock - take a selection down, and watch her turn up her over-indulged pony nose at the strawberry and blackberry, the chamomile (agree with her there - it's muck!), the fennel, the chrysanthemum, the nettle, the Earl Grey, the lapsang suchong etc until she came to the bucket cup of peppermint, and neighed in pony diction approaching the Queen's "That one is acceptable. Let it be peppermint. You may go and brew more", and then waved you away with a stately hoof?

Or did you just think "She likes polos. I'll try peppermint tea."

@toffeeforcoffee I would have no issue with someone getting a kettle, or a take away coffee if it is next to work
If someones baby needs new coat again no issue.
You put wine in your weekly shopping again don't give a crap.
People shopping daily with no need to or going tO shops to browse because they are bored is my issue.
We should all try and limit our visits but times like op you need to nip out.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 14:08

@orlania well I am not grateful and think they are just a dick

AliceMcK · 13/01/2021 14:08

@HoppingOnSteppingStones

Yes I do have a hob but I sure as shit am Not standing over a hot pan waiting forever for it to boil when I have a baby that needs feeding screaming in the small hours or in fact any time of the day then pissing about pouring it into a bottle!

If it was just for a cuppa or whatever then I'd happily go without.

And it didn't bother my neighbour at all. We're very good friends have been for about 18 years.

We use to prepare a load of bottles in advance, especially at night, fill them up with the boiled water ready to add the formula, we found it faster to warm them up to the right temp than cool them down. Hot water from the tap is enough to warm them up.

I know it dosnt help right now, but the best thing we bought when we had number 3 was one of those machines that sterilises the water for you and pours it at the right temperature. It was a god send, I wish I’d known about them with my first 2.

So all the 'non essential moaners' what do you class as non essential

Happily, nobody needs your permission to 'nip' out.

And again, how do you know people are browsing because they're 'bored' unless you're following them around and spying on them?

Haven't read all the responses but I can honestly say I would have bitten his head off. I bought clothes for my baby last week and got some bloke asking me if it was really essential; can't the baby just be wrapped in a blanket? I asked him whether he had ever tried to wrap a blanket around a crawling baby. He told me to calm down. I was perfectly calm as I told him to take his comments and shove them up his arse. Smile

If it wasn't clear, these judgemental fuckers are really doing my head in at the moment!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 14:11

@PotentPangolin technically we are not supposed to just nip out for a coffee , but many are still working and may need to pick up some food or hot drink on shift and if your shopping and takeaway is on your way home ( roughly) not an issue
I guess that has why they have remained open ,

WhenPidgeonsCry · 13/01/2021 14:12

I use a pan to boil water, don't own a kettle. It doesn't take much longer than a kettle. Maybe an extra 30 seconds? Probably less time than walking to the neighbour's house and explaining/asking.

Wow, I assume the arsehole was walking round Tesco wrapped in a blanket then considering clothes aren't essential?
Almostslimjim · 13/01/2021 14:13

Someone on here told another poster that a child's toothbrush and laundry detergent were not essential!

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 14:13

@IcedPurple because i know people who work in some of the shops who observe these people
And I never said anyone needed my permission, I was responding to the poster who asked what I think so maybe read through first

WankPuffins · 13/01/2021 14:14

@AliceMcK love my perfect prep. Used for my two youngest. But be prepared to be jumped on by people who think they are terrible things.

They weren't invented when my my eldest was a baby.

GreekOddess · 13/01/2021 14:14

I've barely left my home since March and have followed all the rules consistently.

Dh does our shopping on his own and buys non essentials, alcohol, treats etc. We've also bought things for around the house (online shopping).

This last year has been shit enough if we are not allowed to buy treats to have whilst locked in our homes it would be horrendous.

Yes, I see your point. I also misspelled 'hospitality' as 'hospital', which might have caused confusion. But still even if you are nearby at work (or god forbid, some form or location of exercise that the police might approve of) then although it might be convenient to get a takeaway, it isn't essential IMHO, just nice or convenient (and once again one person's essential isn't another person's)

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 14:15

@AliceMcK we used to do same but I think that goes against advice now as it has all changed according to friends who have had babies recently

WankPuffins · 13/01/2021 14:15

Jesus Shock

Bloody hell, people are dicks.

farandfew · 13/01/2021 14:15

@PuttyIn that was going to be my next comment but thankfully he fucked off!

IcedPurple · 13/01/2021 14:16

Sure you do.

Oh well, maybe these people will prefer to shop online rather than be judged by the staff for buying things their shop is legally selling.
