Because I've just been to tesco and brought a kettle. I've just had a bloke when I was stood in front to pay. Mumble about an 'essential kettle'

Did he know why I had to buy it. Did he plums!
It's not so I can go home and have a relaxing cuppa. Its so I can make formula for my baby. Because last night our kettle went bang!
We had to get hot water off the neighbour for this mornings bottle so I could then run to grab one.

What's essential to some isn't to others.

Yes I think there's prob a fine line but I wish people wouldn't judge

Ask Scotland Ns has bought in stricter rules on essentials

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 13:20

Also agree re : hot water why did you need to get off a neighbour though as water in a pan works , no need to get off a neighbour

canonlydoblue · 13/01/2021 13:23

I would've had a good look in his trolley and critiqued his choice of essential shopping.

WankPuffins · 13/01/2021 13:24
@WankPuffins

I agree that a kettle is essential, and a lot easier to use than other methods but if yours blew up in the middle of the night, why the hell did you send your husband out to a 24 hour supermarket when you could have taken a pot out the cupboard and boiled in a few minutes on the hob? There was no need for your husband to run out in the middle of the night.
First baby, no sleep, paranoid as hell about everything. You know when you just panic and the world feels like it's closing in?

Looking back now, yes, ridiculous. But at that time it seemed like the only option and life or death Grin

The daft dunking things we do sometimes (plus we lived on a new build estate with Asda literally (annoyingly) on our doorstep.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 13:25

All if you are missing the point , the idea is we limit the amount of times we go out , to shops etc.
If you have a small fridge you nay need to shop more often , thats fine.
If your kettle breaks you need to get one , although to be fair other non contact options for the vast majority , but if your in getting food , throw it in your trolley.
If we all just ask ourselves can I wait and get this on my shop or combine my trip and we save 1 trip a week each , thats a lot less trips out overall.
In wales and scotland they have stricter rules and are coping and what you have to remember if people generally follow guidance no need to make law, if people abuse guidance then it will get changed to law, its really very simple.
Your being asked to think carefully and do what you can , if people don't do that , then the reality is that choice could be taken.
So just be sensible and do what you can

LegoAndLolDolls · 13/01/2021 13:25

I hate people making comments like this. Another reason to do click and collect. Mind you my sour cream had exploded in Mondays click and collect. I went into Tesco to replace it. I bought 4 bath sheets reduced. I'm going straight to hell now

Orlania · 13/01/2021 13:25

Maybe op doesn't have a pan.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 13:27

@Orlania well then she should if bought one with her shopping
Who doesn't have a pan that has a baby , or a microwave and bowl

movingonup20 · 13/01/2021 13:27

Half my trolleys contents isn't strictly essential - I certainly didn't need 3 types of potatoes or ready made puff pastry either

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 13:28

@LegoAndLolDolls at least you tried, asda click and collect buy us you have to go in shop for and wait by exit where everyone leaves and its hard to maintain 2 m, tesco is outside and they bring to your car , so much better.

London1977 · 13/01/2021 13:29

I would have said to him 'what did you just say?' in a loud voice. Then proceeded to have a row with him. My east end would've come out..

Orlania · 13/01/2021 13:29

Who doesn't have a pan that has a baby , or a microwave and bowl

Maybe the op?

Just read the OP.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 13:30

@movingonup20 but your there buying food , thats not the same.
If your getting on one trip , better than buying and then going out multiple times
People mean more someone who goes into tesco everyday to buy a bar of chocolate , etc

ToffeeNotCoffee · 13/01/2021 13:30

It's essential when you need it. End of story.

The self appointed mask monitors and social distancing monitors are out in force. So, now we have the self appointed essential purchase monitors too.

The irony being he was in the same shop as the person purchasing the essential to them essential kettle.

Boil water on the hob or heat it in the microwave. Oh purleeze. Tell that to the people getting take away hot drinks.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 13:32

@Orlania thats ridiculous and you know it, plus if she got hot water of a neighbour could of borrowed a pan, or do you think she lives on a street with no pans
Popping out to get a kettle isn't most peoples issues as not likely to do it weekly, but it is funny she had to get water off a neighbour and couldn't figure how to boil some water another way .

BeakyWinder · 13/01/2021 13:33

Hob would be easier than asking a neighbour! But yeah, I've never seen anyone tutting an non essential shopping, and I go in shops most days.

copernicium · 13/01/2021 13:33

Never mind the babies bottles...a cup of tea is essential to life 😉

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 13:33

@ToffeeNotCoffee people were saying including me about boiling water as op said she had to get some off neighbour ? Before she got out to get the kettle

Orlania · 13/01/2021 13:34

Surely a contender for the Didn't Happen Of The Year Award?

What you don't think people are unreasonable arseholes who think it's their right to challenge others on their purchases?

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 13/01/2021 13:35

@donewithitalltodayandxmas

Your = your bag or your house or your dog etc.

You're = you are

mistletoeandsigh · 13/01/2021 13:35

I haven't seen or heard any muttering in the queues, where the hell is that happening? Everyone is just buying their stuff. I haven't thought to look in other people's baskets Confused

Siepie · 13/01/2021 13:36

During the Welsh firebreak, when ‘non essentials’ were closed off, a social worker friend had to rummage around in her loft to find her DC’s old clothes to lend to a foster carer who had an emergency placement who had arrived with only pyjamas. Previously the foster carers would have gone to a late night supermarket to get some clothes, a teddy, etc.

A social worker on Twitter made a whole thread of the issues that the ban on ‘non essentials’ was causing for vulnerable families.

WhenPidgeonsCry · 13/01/2021 13:36

I definitely don't care that she went out to buy a kettle, but I still want to know why the first thought was to get a neighbour to boil water rather than just use a pan on the hob or a mug in the microwave or whatever.

And no, I don't think OP has no pan, mug, hob or microwave.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 13/01/2021 13:36

If the rules get tightened because people take the piss and are going daily then everyone suffers.
NS has just toughened in Scotland don't be surprised if we are not far behind.
Supermarket workers have families as well , we have a duty to help try and protect them by maybe just being a little more cautious and limiting our trips out where we can.
