China - biggest spike in cases in 5 months - lockdown in some cities

This is one of the new articles this morning and it’s concerning as they had their own vaccination program rolled out quite early on last year

If what we hear on China can be trusted isn’t this a big worry that despite our mass vaccination effort that we could still be locking down regionally even a year later?

As far as I know the Chinese vaccines are still in Phase 3 trials though apparently they have been given experimentally to about a million high risk people. China’s population is nearly one and a half billion, so the number who have had the vaccine won’t have even scratched the surface.

Onedropbeat · 13/01/2021 06:26

I’ve also seen that the WHO hasn’t been allowed into Wuhan yet to investigate the origins of the disease.

This is the snippet taken from the article :

Despite coronavirus first being detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019, a World Health Organisation team will only be allowed to visit the city for the first time on Thursday.
The organisation has voiced frustration about late delays preventing its team from travelling to China last week.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, said the scientists will focus on how the virus first jumped to people.
"Studies will begin in Wuhan to identify the potential source of infection of the early cases," Dr Tedros said.

This also seems so strange and far down the line

I think the reality is we will be locked down for much longer

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/01/2021 06:31

But they haven't vaccinated everyone yet. So no, it's not a worry. China's population is a LOT bigger than ours.

ChessIsASport · 13/01/2021 06:42

My Dad’s Chinese students told him that they were all vaccinated before they returned to university in September so more than just the vulnerable must have been vaccinated. But China is so corrupt that it wouldn’t surprise me if the rich children of officials who study abroad got it before the elderly.

Againstmachine · 13/01/2021 07:27

WHO were die ed entry a first time, now when they try and visit again there is another reason they can't.

Yep trust the Chinese government.

Definitely suspicious
SexTrainGlue · 13/01/2021 07:35

Do remember that WHO have already visited Wuhan once, right back at the start. The team was international (led by scientist from US)

The summary of the full report is here

sashagabadon · 13/01/2021 07:39

China has what 1.6 billion people and they have vaccinated a couple of million so far I think. Maybe more but no where near enough to stop outbreaks. We are 66 million and have vaccinated 3 million ish.

sashagabadon · 13/01/2021 07:41

Actually maybe 1.4 billion. I think it is India with 1.6 billion

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 13/01/2021 07:46

The news is reporting this morning that the Chinese vaccine is only just over 50% effective here - that may have something to do with it?

SexTrainGlue · 13/01/2021 07:52

I think the main messages here:

  • how quickly the virus can re-emerge and spread widely
  • how well we are doing in terms of vaccine roll-out, if you look beyond our shores
Heyahun · 13/01/2021 07:53

Lolz at believing anything to come out of that country tbh!

Mousehole10 · 13/01/2021 08:10

They’ve hardly vaccinated anyone, only their military and a very small percentage of the population. We’ve vaccinated more than them in % population.

MrDinklesOhSnap · 13/01/2021 08:21

I know this is beside the point and not helpful, but I’m just so bloody angry at China for giving this to the world and taking no responsibility or ownership by actively resisting the international community’s attempts to investigate the source. Why are they so bloody cagey and corrupt?

I think the next few years will bring massive recriminations. All of humanity has a responsibility to stop this happening again and China must acknowledge their part in this.

Kokeshi123 · 13/01/2021 08:21

Some news just came out suggesting that the Chinese vax may not be very effective--only about 50% or so.

www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-55642648?xtor=AL-72-%5Bpartner%5D-%5Bbbc.news.twitter%5D-%5Bheadline%5D-%5Bnews%5D-%5Bbizdev%5D-%5Bisapi%5D&at_custom2=twitter&at_custom3=%40BBCWorld&at_medium=custom7&at_custom4=C1240A7E-554F-11EB-8DC3-69004844363C&at_campaign=64&at_custom1=%5Bpost+type%5D

And there will still be tons of unvaccinated people in China.

I know what you mean but in my unknowledgeable opinion I think it honestly might be better to not bring the recriminations down too harshly.

I’m so angry too, buts purely because , once we get our world/ lives back it would be horrendous to just ruin it all again with some sort of war. We all deserve a few years at least of peace

Cam77 · 13/01/2021 08:43

...... But Butantan stressed that the vaccine is 78% effective in preventing mild cases that needed treatment and 100% effective in staving off moderate to serious cases.

^ to provide the fuller picture. So the virus will still be out there doing the rounds for a long while, but will (hopefully) become no more noticeable than the common cold.

Cam77 · 13/01/2021 08:46

Er, I believe that a WHO team is arriving in Wuhan on Thursday.
Remember, we don’t even know for sure that it came from China - it’s the most likely source given that’s where it first had a big impact. But it’s still quite possible it originated elsewhere.

Onedropbeat · 13/01/2021 09:13

I actually thought I saw an article only about a week ago saying they were close to proving it came from the Wuhan institute of virology but now I’m thinking it must have been fake news or it would be being discussed more

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 13/01/2021 09:19

Bear in mind that when they talk about a spike in cases they are talking about 100 new cases a day in a population of 1.4 billion.

It’s not the sort of numbers we are seeing here. The lockdown is to prevent those sorts of numbers.

Blue565 · 13/01/2021 09:21

They don't want anyone to confirm that it definitely originated in Wuhan because they are currently working the propaganda machine in overdrive to make it clear Covid came from somewhere else (likely the USA).

If they allow WHO in to Wuhan they are admitting it started in China to their own people

trulydelicious · 13/01/2021 09:26

@Blue565

If they allow WHO in to Wuhan

I hope the WHO investigation is sufficiently rigorous and up to scratch when/if they go in to enable everyone to understand what happened

MrDinklesOhSnap · 13/01/2021 09:26

@Onedropbeat I read that too.

The WHO scientists were initially denied entry to China due at the last minute to “visa issues” (some of the scientists were actually in transit). Why? Can we assume it was an innocent oversight? Can we trust the Chinese government to cooperate with the international community with complete transparency, or are those scientists going to be restricted and censored in their investigations?

The pandemic epicentre was in Wuhan so of course China should be responsible for the initial management of the outbreak whether or not it actually originated there.

Nearly two million people have died worldwide. Obviously not advocating any international unrest or violence, but China needs to be honest about this.

IcedPurple · 13/01/2021 09:31

China is huge. Well over a billion people and the size of a continent. Maybe better to think of it as a continent rather than a country. Local outbreaks - which are quickly nipped in the bud - are probably not a cause of great concern.
