Government Vitamin D for the CEV

Hmmph · 12/01/2021 20:53

Have signed up my Mum to get the vitamin D tablets from the Government scheme and have heard nothing. The “application” window closed yesterday, but still have had nothing- not even an email acknowledging application.

Has anyone else heard anything?

It’ll be summer before they send anything at this rate! Luckily I bought her some (very expensive) tablets to keep her going. But this scheme, which should be simple, seems appalling!

OP posts:
Delatron · 12/01/2021 21:07

It does seem appalling. I use a spray from Amazon called Better You vitamin D3 spray. It’s only about £7. That could be a cheaper option?

RaggieDolls · 12/01/2021 21:11

Does she need very expensive ones? Vitamin D tablets are £1 for 60 days supply at my supermarket.

nether · 12/01/2021 21:13

They said they'd be posted out in January, so they'll probably start appearing through the letterbox soon

FuzzyPuffling · 12/01/2021 21:27

DH has heard nothing either.

BunsyGirl · 12/01/2021 21:36

They’re cheap in Aldi

FuzzyPuffling · 13/01/2021 07:42

They may be cheap in Aldi, but as CEV we've not been in a supermarket since March.

Delatron · 13/01/2021 07:50

Amazon? They’re cheap on there and deliver the next day

Jrobhatch29 · 13/01/2021 07:53

My nanna already gets vitamin D on prescription as she is a dialysis patient.

I got a year supply high strength for us from amazon for about £6

ChocOrange1 · 13/01/2021 07:58

Vitamin D is super cheap and can be ordered online from boots, amazon, Holland and barrett or supermarkets.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/01/2021 08:03

@RaggieDolls

This. A prescription (unless over 60) would be much more expensive.

Out of interest the Sainsbury's One a Day are double the dose of the Aldi One a Day and a bit more expensive.

KatherineJaneway · 13/01/2021 08:05

Vitamin D tablets are available cheaply from shops as pp have said. Why go through all this faff, just buy some.

Mousehole10 · 13/01/2021 08:07

Vitamin D is really cheap, just buy her some.

Wishitsnows · 13/01/2021 08:10

Where did you find expensive ones the 4000iu ones are really cheap on amazon.

nether · 13/01/2021 08:23

Because the scheme exists, and it's not either/or?

I'm tired of the negativity towards the CEV when they have an expectation that a scheme for them will work adequately.

There was no outcry about the appalling quality of our food parcels. Indeed we were told to put up, shut up and be grateful.

Now we are being told we shouldn't use this one-off scheme either

borageforager · 13/01/2021 08:33

There’s a shortage of Vit D isn’t there? Maybe it’s just in my neck of the woods but it was mentioned in relation to the unavailability of Vit D for my jaundiced newborn nephew.

IceDiscoSkater · 13/01/2021 08:39

@Mousehole10

I got mine in Poundland
Happynewtier · 13/01/2021 08:54

Just order some online? Surely that's better than nothing in the interim while you wait for the others to become available? We all take the vitabiotics 2000iu ones, about £5 for 90 tabs, and usually on a 3 for 2 online or in big Tescos. Holland and Barrett do a vitD spray which we use for the kids and occasionally us too. Apparently much easier for the body to absorb. Again, it's inexpensive, and you can order online.

reprehensibleme · 13/01/2021 09:05

There is no negativity to the cev on this thread. There are people telling you that you can buy high dose vit d for about 2p per day, to protect your mother. Would have thought that was your priority.

rosie39forever · 13/01/2021 09:16

Hi op my dh applied for the scheme well before Christmas and still has heard nothing. For those who are indignant at the CEV getting something for nothing all shielders were advised by the government to register for this regardless of their ability to purchase their own supply.
OP just asked a question about a legitimate scheme not where she could buy vit d.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/01/2021 09:29

Surely it would be sensible to spend a couple of pounds on vit D from a shop while waiting for the prescription come through? My daughter qualifies for the free stuff but as she pays for prescriptions it would be better to buy it. This will be true for a lot of people who are CEV.

Buzzinwithbez · 13/01/2021 09:32

I think at some point we need to take responsibility for our own health. The govt doors the bare minimum when it comes to supporting health rather than treating illness.

I can understand that a lot of people will feel that the d vitamins the govt recommend will be at the right dose and so on.

There's a lot more to vitamin d than just taking a supplement. There's a circular relationship with magnesium too. Taking vitamin d means more efficient use of magnesium, so we must ensure uptake of magnesium is adequate too - as it will otherwise be depleted. Vitamin d needs magnesium for it's uptake.

There are studies that show that for people who get adequate sun but are still d deficient, supplementing magnesium alone is enough to raise d levels.

msbevvy · 13/01/2021 09:35

My DH and I are shielding and signed up for this and haven't heard anything.
As you say, they don't even acknowledge the application so it gets you wondering if it went through ok.

iVampire · 13/01/2021 09:37

ffs - it says in the opening post that they have bought some

The thread’s about the working of a government scheme - are those of you telling off CEV posters also CEV

and @nether - how are you today? You don’t sound your usual self,m Flowers and FWIW I agree about how some posts on this thread are coming across

We didn’t get an email acknowledgment either, but I think I read that they would all be dispatched shortly after the closing date for registrations

KatherineJaneway · 13/01/2021 09:59

I'm tired of the negativity towards the CEV when they have an expectation that a scheme for them will work adequately.

There was no negativity in my post towards anyone CEV, you're projecting. OP wants the tablets and they are taking time. I am simply pointing out if she wants them quickly, she can cheaply buy some. Problem solved.

iVampire · 13/01/2021 10:07

I agree with @nether and think a number of posts on thus thread come across as negative

It might not have been your intention, but it has been your effect

Please would you desist from telling the person who has been hurt by your comments that it did not happen
