Unpaid carers - vaccine

100 replies

Florelei · 12/01/2021 20:45

I understand that unpaid carers of vulnerable people are in priority group 6. Does anyone know how those people will make the health service aware to make sure that they get vaccinated?

Thanks for any information!

@HoppingOnSteppingStones On the guidance my aunt found its those who recieve carers allowance. she is only partly correct it’s those in receipt of carers allowance or those that are the main carer. I have already linked to the official priority list from JVCI but here it is again as a screen shot. See footnote three.

@june2007 you do NOT need carers allowance. Did you bother to look at the link I posted yesterday or are you just on the wind up? Here again just for you. See footnote 3.

@Hmmph

How do you register with your GP though? It seems a bit weird just to call them up and tell them I’m caring for my Mum! I feel like they’d just say “good for you”!
no, they should note the information on your records and on hers, if you have the same GP. there should have been notices about this since many years, in the waiting room, to register as a carer. it does affect things like priority for flu jabs. and your own health may be impacted by caring responsibilities.
HazeyJaneII · 14/01/2021 18:40

@KeepOnKeepingOnAgainandAgain

I can't phone my GP - 20 minutes of message and then pointed to online e-consult which is not appropriate. I actually spent ages going through page after page of irrelevant questions to get nowhere.

I tried to speak to a GP about my HRT only to get a phone call from a pharmacy asking me what I wanted. I want my GP to prescribe. I had to explain that i have no prescription for any alternative but had to wait for new stock. They said GP would make contact. They didn't. I gave up.

It shouldn't be my responsibility but 2 minute phone call I can fit in, not so much 40 minute wormhole.

Does your gp practice have an email address - I would email them and say that you want them to know that you are a parent carer for your ds. All gps should be providing support for carers, or have the capacity to do so. At ours they send out a carers pack with information about local support, register you for a flu jab etc.
RuthW · 14/01/2021 18:43

Please let your gp surgery know you are a carer. There are also other advantages not just covid jabs. Your surgery will have a carers' lead (me) and you will get great help and advice.

Have you not been having your free flu jab?

Sirzy · 14/01/2021 18:43

If you have a local carers centre rjeu should be able to make sure your registered too

That's exactly what we want you to do! You can always ask for their carers' lead.
RuthW · 14/01/2021 18:44

@goose1964

Our GPs surgery says than unofficial carers will not be given priority
They are group 6, that is a priority
RuthW · 14/01/2021 18:46

@Florelei

Yep, they did treat me like I was trying to get myself up the list.
Please please complain to the carers' lead or practice manager. Every surgery has to have a carers' list.
RuthW · 14/01/2021 18:48

Carers do not have to claim carers allowance. 10% of the population are carers and the percentage is a lot more in women aged 40-65

june2007 · 14/01/2021 19:02

So all I need to do is phone my GP? (And you don,t need DLA, pip or CA?) Could my daughter who is really a young carer get it as well?. Sorry I did look at the link but was on my phone and it was too small to read.

This ^

I am CEV ( emails from Matt Hancock etc) but in receipt of no benefits and my partner not in receipt of Carter’s allowance as he works full time.
He is down as my carer at gp and received flu vaccine and will receive Covid vaccine with rest of group 6.
Escalate to practice manager or to CCG if no joy.....don’t take no for an answer

june2007 · 14/01/2021 19:12

ok it says main carer so my daughter won,t be elligable.

Kitkat151 · 14/01/2021 19:22

Just main carer yes..... and main carer to be over 18.
june2007 · 14/01/2021 19:24

Yes thankyou.

Sevensilverrings · 01/02/2021 15:39

I’ve just been on phone to Carers uk, and even they seemed a little confused. Unpaid carers without any benefits being claimed, fine, but then she got tangled up in whether my son was clinically vulnerable. He’s not classed as such, he is autistic and needs me. He won’t ever live independently. He’s a young adult now. If I get ill we are screwed.
My surgery says I’m not eligible, but they have added me to the carers list, so I’m not sure if that will automatically trigger anything or not. My surgery are bloody useless though.....
Is it possible they just don’t know yet? I’ve read on here that the guidance is being updated. Does anyone know about that?

Sevensilverrings · 01/02/2021 15:40

Carers uk said they are getting a lot of phone calls about this....

Timbucktime · 01/02/2021 15:44

You just phone them and ask to be put on their register. The first time I did this as I have a disabled child the receptionist asked who I cared for and when I said my disabled child they responded with “well that’s not really caring is it”. Clearly she seemed to think you can’t be disabled unless your over 60.
Luckily the 2nd time I tried it was done with no issues.

Florelei · 01/02/2021 16:02

Hi - yes I had a bit of difficulty. However, after some persistence with the drs they logged me as a carer and told me I’m entitled to the flu jab.

I tried calling my GP, my Dh has a terminal illness and is in receipt of maximum level PIP. They said they’re only on Group 2 for vaccinations, when I said I’d booked him a jab through the government link, they said he shouldn’t be eligible for another 6-8 weeks, even though he’s had the letter to say he’s CEV and is in group 4. They also said I’d need to write a letter and send it to them with photocopies and evidence, even though they have all the notes and the hospice nurse said I qualified for paid carers allowance (which I chose not to claim). Also my dc has severe mental health issues and has been under Adult Services & I’ve had to take time of work to deal with this on several occasions.
I’ve given up now and don’t want to deal with them, they’re so unhelpful and are not interested in helping patients at all.

If anyone has an understanding GP, be grateful as our Practice is awful

Poppyliveshere · 01/02/2021 16:35

Practice manager was lovely and added me to carers list and said that she was worried that some people wouldn’t know and would be left off 😊

Ahhh VG that’s really awful....you are well entitled to a carers jab.... my partner had to show my CEV letter ( email copy) and then was added no problem..... you’ve got so much going on ....last thing you need is to be fighting to prove you are a carer
Zarabara123 · 23/02/2021 16:57

I had no issue being added, but they said the computer didn’t auto add me to group 6 and also said they’d heard nothing about it and the media was wrong about unpaid carers. I sent them links to govt website and was told they’d updated my code/flag their end but that was all they could do! Centrally they said the GP needs to initiate the vaccine invite.

Alone97 · 23/02/2021 17:01

If you have carers allowance you can book online now.

Zarabara123 · 23/02/2021 17:09

Thanks but I don’t as I earn more than the requirement.
