I was really surprised at how many fines issued. If true is it any wonder the virus is spreading.
I’m interested have you or do you know someone who’s been fined for breaking Covid rules ? If so what happened.

I don’t think that’s many fines in the whole of the uk is it?

Really you don’t think 45,000 is high ? I’m really surprised as most people I speak to are really keen on doing the right thing . I guess it’s a very small percentage but still .

Give me a badge and the authority to go with it, set me loose in London, and I'd get you another 45,000 by the end of the day.

I've given out 3 so far at work. It is only in this most recent lockdown we are being encouraged to use the enforcement of fining. Previously it was all about engage and explain and just ask people to move on/go home. Now we are handing out the fines much more often.

lljkk · 12/01/2021 18:21

45k fines since March 2020? There's no denominator in that story.

IndecentFeminist · 12/01/2021 18:23

In what period? It doesn't sound a lot across a country with the population.

Orf1abc · 12/01/2021 18:27

My concern is about consistency. How many have been issued for a walk five miles from home, when others have cycled further and not been fined?

Also interesting to know how many are challenged and cancelled.

What were they for people in groups / not wearing a mask ?

I wonder how many of the fines actually get paid. Can imagine many of them do not.

Indeed, especially when they’re not issued correctly because the rule of law is being misinterpreted as down to the individual police officer’s opinion (eg fining for breach of guidance etc). ConfusedShock
Stationfork · 13/01/2021 00:03

The first one was given for breaching covid by having a gathering at their home, all visitors to the party quickly scarpered so homeowner was given the ticket. The second and third was at the same time two men in a vehicle late at night no reason to be out were pulled over and said they were on their way home from being at a friends house. So both got one as both over 18 and from separate households

NoseinBook3 · 13/01/2021 00:34

I would hazard a guess that a lot will not be upheld in court.

This is the kind of news which is spread deliberately to divide us. Too busy bickering because Doris went against the guidance and went for two walks in a day rather than holding the Government to account.

RedRiverShore1 · 13/01/2021 05:24

Some in our county town have had several according to the local paper, they just keep getting them and have not paid, I guess they will end up in court, that's if they bother to turn up but they are probably the sorts that are always in trouble anyway so it won't bother them.

PhilCornwall1 · 13/01/2021 05:45

Also interesting to know how many are challenged and cancelled.

That would be very interesting to know, but alas, a statistic we'll never know, because it doesn't sound as good as the one for fines issued.

I reckon a fair few of those will be cancelled.

RedRiverShore1 · 13/01/2021 05:55

According to Sky news in November, three police forces had rescinded over 40% of fines and guess what, Derbyshire police was one of them

PhilCornwall1 · 13/01/2021 06:00

and guess what, Derbyshire police was one of them

That doesn't surprise me at all.

TheReluctantPhoenix · 13/01/2021 06:27

I just don’t get how some people would like Corona laws to be enforced. I am guessing some people would like no enforcement whatsoever.

I think the police are being asked to do a really hard job but, for everyone’s sake, there needs to be a feeling that the Corona laws (not guidance) are just like any other law; obey them or you will be fined.

MummaBear4321 · 13/01/2021 07:21

45,000 isnt high in a population of 67 million and those fines have been since March. It's not rising because of 'rule breakers'. Its rising from people working, kids still in school, people socialising in their bubbles. If you think if you follow the rules you are safe, then you are deluded.

RedRiverShore1 · 13/01/2021 07:22

They could do more to enforce the laws so that rich people were punished like footballers and 'celebrities' jetting off here there and everywhere and holding gatherings, I don't think a £200 fine is quite going to work or even a £10,000 one come to that. Once again fines are to keep the plebs in line, the rich can do as they please.
