Looks like the media are interested, and the usual pattern of Tory MPs trying to defend it.

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 12/01/2021 07:52

Do you have a link @inquietant?

We are sending top up packs from our foodbank to schools so they can put extra in. There is not one school that has turned down the offer.

BlackeyedSusan · 12/01/2021 08:07

It is on Radio four now. describing the linked photo.

CeeJay81 · 12/01/2021 08:13

That's shocking. That's way less than £10 worth of food. Those company's making profit out of starving children, should be ashamed of themselves. Give them supermarket vouchers instead

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 12/01/2021 08:16

I find it genuinely upsetting that no one in Chartwells (and maybe others) thought to themselves “hang on a minute...that’s not acceptable”. Where are these people’s morals?!

Shame on them Angry

That's disgusting! I bought a weeks worth of shopping yesterday for £38 to feed 3 adults (ok had rice, onions and pasta at home but everything else). The food bank made the packs here not some contractor and they are far bigger

TheQueef · 12/01/2021 08:30

It's capitalism.
God forbid a parent buys sweets and crisps, better instead to allow some CEO to make £££.

IndecentFeminist · 12/01/2021 08:32

They have to make a bit of profit, that's how they pay staff to do it all in the first place. That is a bit of a piss take level however

BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2021 08:38

This was on BBC News this morning. Or it might not have Chartwells, but they were talking to a school head teacher who was saying that he saw the poor quality and limited amount of what was being provided and made his own arrangements at a fraction of the cost - possibly the school pays the £30 to the supplier out of the pupil premium money?

But anyway, it's shit and totally unacceptable.

blueangel19 · 12/01/2021 08:38

The company has replied asking which school because it does not reflect what they provide.

CornedBeef451 · 12/01/2021 08:41

Jack Monroe the bootstrap chef is compiling examples on Twitter.

ComDummings · 12/01/2021 08:42

In the Twitter thread many people have exposed the links between the bigwigs at Chartwells and the Tories. They don’t care. They hate ‘poor’ people. It’s as simple as that.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/01/2021 08:45

I saw a post on here about the food package and thought that it was enough food for 5 lunches for a child, but I didn't realise it was supposed to be £30 worth!! It looks like barely £10, and not much variety either. Its awful that foodbanks are having to step in because a private company are making a profit on this!

iamabox · 12/01/2021 08:46

My sister had a hamper to pick up, and she recieved...

2 tins tuna

2 small yoghurts

2 loaves of bread

2 pints of milk

2 cucumbers

3 tomatoes

3 potatoes

1 apple

1 orange

1 banana

While grateful, it isnt really helpful.

Itisasecret · 12/01/2021 08:47

This was all over Twitter last night. The owner of the umbrella company is a massive Tory donor. It’s got the govt scared, even the DFE tweeted about it.

rockingllama · 12/01/2021 08:48

Follow the money back to Paul Walsh CEO. Big Game Hunter and Tory Party donor. Constantly criticised in the Press for the huge amounts of money he pays himself. Snout in the Trough

The profit is meant to be made by good negotiating for cost price. They won't have paid RRP for those items - they will have had bulk deals with the manufacturers. That's how they should make the profit.

£30 a week should be mean £30 (RRP) of food, otherwise vouchers would be better value.

Feeding children doesn't need to generate a profit. The 'profit' is society having fed children it benefits all of us. No one needs to make money.

A bit of Profit ? In the year ending 2019 they made a profit of £1.77 BILLION !
BarbaraofSeville · 12/01/2021 08:59

The ideal way would be to put the money on a prepay debit card, then the parents can go to any shop.

Failing that, vouchers for a local supermarket, preferably one of the cheaper ones so the money goes further, but that might cause difficulties with travel cost or brand availability.

blueangel19 · 12/01/2021 09:00

Can somebody please explain to me why some people get vouchers and others food from the schools? Which schools the disgraced company provides food to? How m any parcels like this were distributed?

I am certainly not paying huge taxes and people still going hungry. However, I need big proof apart from one photo from twitter.

ComDummings · 12/01/2021 09:01

They don’t like vouchers because all those feckless parents will spend it on fags and booze. Even though we know that isn’t true that’s what they think.
TheQueef · 12/01/2021 09:04

@blueangel19 I don't think it's disputed it's Tory party policy.
nepotism

the practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.

Chartwells? I could’ve told the government that they a crock of shit. The company I work for cancelled their contract, but took on their staff over lockdown. There’s too much management of staff going on for them to bother with the actual finished product. We do our own catering now.
