Runny nose wearing a mask.

Hi all, I have ongoing sinus problems so that’s probably the cause.

But I’ve noticed every time I wear a mask for a prolonged time my nose starts streaming. Has anyone experienced this?

It wasn’t an issue in summer. Only now. As above I do have sinus issues that are worse in winter.

It’s hard because I can feel my nose running and need to wipe it then dispose of tissue, wash hands and it feels like a mission and taking a mask off in a shop is a no but my nose is running 😭😭

It wouldn’t be running if I didn’t have the mask on.. so it is the mask that triggers it.

Anyone else experienced this??

This happens to me a lot. No idea if it’s the mask which triggers it. I’m also quite prone to sinus issues.

Sorry I can’t be of help with a solution.

It does happen to me sometimes. I have to make sure no one's looking when I've done shopping and take it off. Messy!

Happens to me every time I wear a mask. Makes me wonder if all the nurses and doctors have snot filled masks ConfusedGrin

Yes, this happens to me too. It's gross. I thought it was traces of soap powder left after the wash but my son uses disposables and gets the same thing.

J101112 · 11/01/2021 21:15

I honestly thought it was just me lol! I can feel my nose underneath and I start to get really agitated at it! 😫 maybe I’ll try a different sort of mask!

Dame here, everytime. Only use disposables, so have to bear with when inside, then wait till no ones about, blow nose, find bin, wash hands.

CrunchyCarrot · 11/01/2021 21:17

Just a guess but maybe with a mask on it warms your nose up and that causes it to start running? Rather like eating a hot meal?

I've started wearing these inside my masks and they've helped loads

So it's just not me and DS!!!! Runny nose in mask is standard, DS has been challenged by several nose bleeds. Double bag and bin at home but I feel it's not enough.

Jellykat · 11/01/2021 21:28

I get this every time, and have come to the conclusion it's to do with the warm air i'm breathing.. i also get a runny nose when i go into hot houses (which mine isn't) and am convinced the heat is melting whatevers up there.. not come up with a solution though!

Elouera · 11/01/2021 21:33

I've worn masks for hours at work, in a fairly sedetary role, but dont find it an issue. I find going from inside, then cold outside, to inside a warm train/bus etc, then into the cold again is what triggers my nose to run.

If it was for a short time, could you plug your nostrils with tissue, or even tiny tampons to stop the drip? They'd be covered by your mask anyways, so on you would know. Do you normally take anything for your sinus issues to dry it up?

eurochick · 11/01/2021 22:07

My nose also runs when I wear a mask. It's gross!

  1. What are they?
  1. Do they as lso prevent steaming up glasses?

I get this too!

I think it’s a combination of factors - something rubbing against your nose plus the heat generated by your own breath.

marmiteprincess · 12/01/2021 08:55

Same here. Doesn't even feel agitated just streams

UpTheLaganInABubble · 12/01/2021 09:11

@PickAChew They're wee plastic frames that keep the mask away from your nose and mouth, I just got mine on Ebay for a couple of quid. They didn't help stop my glasses steam up but what did was adding a stronger nose wire to my masks... I just used an opened paper clip. I also got a non-fogging cloth from a local Optician's which has helped too, but I don't remember the brand name of it

garlictwist · 12/01/2021 09:15

Yeah I have this too but to be honest my nose runs all the time in winter anyway, mask or no mask.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 12/01/2021 09:17

Same here. It annoyingly happens most when I go from a cold car park into a warm supermarket, so I feel like I can't de-mask to blow my nose!
