How far away is your Bubble?

HmmSureJan · 11/01/2021 21:02

I am allowed to bubble with my parents as I am a single parent with disabled children.

They live a 90 minute drive away though. The guidance is you should try to bubble in your local area but I don't have anyone here at all.

Anyone else bubble with a household that far away?

Yep my DP is also 90 minutes away, he lives on his own and doesn't have anyone closer to him to bubble with (all his family live local to me). I don't see the issue as I drive there without stopping and then we only leave the house for walks, so I can't see that it makes much difference whether he's 10 minutes away or 90.

mnahmnah · 11/01/2021 21:07

My DM is 150 miles away. We’re her support bubble, only because she is alone and in her 70s. Who knows when we will see her again though!

Heffle · 11/01/2021 21:08

Further than that OP, 2hrs. Similar sort of situation with one person having moved away for work.

flowerycurtain · 11/01/2021 21:11

Close family member is in the forces. Whilst he's on active duty for 4 months his wife has bubbled with her mum 300 miles away. She doesn't work and has a child under 2. She goes to stay for 2 weeks. Then Hime for two weeks by herself then her mum comes to stay for two weeks.

heidbuttsupper · 11/01/2021 21:11

Me too @HmmSureJan my parents are my support bubble and are 3 hours away.

XenoBitch · 11/01/2021 21:13

My parents are mine and they are 45 miles away.

UglyHoose · 11/01/2021 21:15

My OH lives half an hour / 25 miles away up the motorway. He works from home so when he leaves here on a Sunday he doesn't see anyone until he comes back down at the weekend.

HeronLanyon · 11/01/2021 21:15

My dp is currently more than 200 miles away and we had a discussionheated argument about this recently. There’s the letter of the law and bending it !
In my circs I don’t think your distance is unreasonable if they are your sole and sensible bubble.

HmmSureJan · 11/01/2021 21:18

This is a relief. I was worried that I was kind of pushing at the limits of the guidance by having them as my bubble but they really are the only possible choice.

ButtaCup · 11/01/2021 21:19

My support bubble is with my DM and DNan (they live together, I’m single) they live on the same street. However, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have a support bubble who lives further away

JanuaryBlus · 11/01/2021 21:20

Father in law just passed last week, so we've now taken MIL in our bubble 90 mins away.

HeronLanyon · 11/01/2021 21:28

Support january - tough times.

Dinosaurcatcher · 11/01/2021 21:35

Genuine question - how much support do you give or get to/from someone that is hundreds of miles and hours away?

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 11/01/2021 21:38

Ours is the same as yours, maybe a tiny bit less. It's my IL's and they babysit once a week every week so we've just carried that on. We don't have anyone closer who could help.

I have two autistic children and am a single parent. What do you think? genuine, none, snippy answer Smile

A little over 100 miles away, but she had to move recently. Prior to that she was in my town, but circumstances meant she had to move.

Dinosaurcatcher · 11/01/2021 21:43

@HmmSureJan I don’t know. An hour a day? 6 hours a day? Overnight once a week? Every other day? 7 days a week?
It was actually a genuine question - there was a clue where I wrote genuine

Imissmoominmama · 11/01/2021 21:45

My Dad is 90 minutes away too. I am his bubble. I’m not sure how to proceed, other than regular phone calls and messages.

Dollywilde · 11/01/2021 21:47

12 miles and 20 mins drive. I don’t really care if anyone thinks it’s appropriate, I would genuinely be a danger to myself if I didn’t have them.

Katie517 · 11/01/2021 21:48

Mine are 80 miles away. I’m not concerned at all. They come to me or me to them at least once a week. We don’t live local to family so that’s my only option. I also wouldn’t feel obliged to explain myself to anyone who had an issue with it. People need to mind their own business.

Takeoutyourhen · 11/01/2021 21:49

Also on the verge of a heated discussion @HeronLanyon, 150 mile distance and one thinks it isn’t “in the spirit of lockdown” so seemingly willing to give up support of mental well-being for an unknown duration of time. It’s hard as we all know what a mess the country is in and we try to follow the guidance but there isn’t a bending of rules for support bubbles. Travel is permitted runs alongside the stay local message so it’s certainly conflicting however I also think that depending on personal circumstances a unilateral decision can cause some sense of unease/rug pulled from beneath your feet.

Womencanlift · 11/01/2021 21:50

About 35 minutes away and prior to Christmas I would go to them every weekend but I have decided not to go up at least for the first month of this lockdown, maybe longer.
Not worth the risk when numbers are so high and I am totally fine with that. Appreciate others may need their bubble though

Three pairs of hands every other weekend or so is a huge source of support and respite for me.
