How long will vaccine immunity last?

I just got a really depressing message from a friend that the vaccine doesn’t offer very long lasting immunity and doesn’t see a way out 😭😭 my anxiety is through the roof. Is this true? Will I need to get a job as a key worker to get my kids back into school?!

Well your friend is wrong. They literally do not know as no-ones had the vaccine for more than 6ish months. So they cannot say. That date won’t come for at least a year after the first lot of vaccine receivers had it.

Everything I’ve read suggests the opposite however. Scientists feeling reasonably confident immunity will last a year minimum. Which is fine, the flu jab is annual & no bother.

What’s your friend’s source?

SnowFields · 10/01/2021 22:35

I agree that it’s currently unknown but likely to be an annual booster, possibly just given to those most at risk (like flu). If the virus mutates, the vaccine will very quickly be adapted to manage that mutation.

ShouldIgonow · 10/01/2021 22:44

I don’t know her source! Good point. I just don’t even want to talk about the vaccine or covid or schools anymore sorry to bring it on here. We have two stressful jobs and now homeschooling has gone up a level - I think to match what the others are getting in school. Just all feeling a bit much. Once again sorry to put it on here and thanks for the responses

I imagine that it will last quite a long time but there is a strong possibility of viral mutations going by the emergence of new variants so I suspect it will become annual to cover the most common strains circulating. It might take a while to get to that stage I imagine though.

If it helps the children in schools are not getting any better education. They are all getting the same, although those at home are likely getting a lot more attention.
I am a TA, I supervise a class of 20 (will be 24 next week). It is a mixed KS2 class (years 3-6). They are doing exactly the same online work as those at home. I spend most of my day doing behaviour management as many of the children in school have challenges. The teachers can't realistically teach in school and online as well respond to online queries and look at online work, so they are, quite rightly, teaching online from home.
Please don't think your children at home are any worse off - very little is being done in school either!

Our school is set up differently. 3 form entry so 1 teacher at school with TA. Head said they plan as a year group - so she’s hoping there is no difference in the work. I know it’ll come down to delivery though. Kids in school getting proper schooling but same curriculum sent to us at home with 3X teams lessons today.

No one knows, but immunity to SARS has been found to last 17 years, which is as long as it's been known to be around.

Isn't that immunity following infection and will immunity from the vaccine depend on what type of vaccine you have?

amicissimma · 11/01/2021 22:20

Again, I don't think anyone knows. We never had a SARS vaccine to compare with natural immunity and we haven't had any time since the Covid vaccine. Even Covid infections haven't been very long ago.

AgeLikeWine · 11/01/2021 22:25

We don’t know yet, as even the patients who participated in the trials were only vaccinated relatively recently. We may all need annual boosters, or immunity may last for longer. Only time will tell.

Ignore the media scaremongering about ‘immunity may only last a few months’. They don’t know that.

As I understand it, immunity from vaccinations are a high magnitude greater than that conferred from a standard infection. And yes, depending on the type of vaccines, some will elicit a better response. However, as pp, we don't have specific data, as this is a new virus, with new vaccines, some of which are completely new technology.

Having anxiety is awful. You need to try and rationalise that even if this jab doesn't last forever, it will give protection now. In the future we maybe given a top up or longer lasting vaccine. It gives us time Thanks
