Pfizer - gap between the 1st and 2nd jab

Apologies if this has been discussed but can anyone explain the concerns with lengthening the gap between the Pfizer vaccines? I understand it has been trialled with the 21 day gap so therefore they don't have the data on a longer gap but is there a concern from them that by increasing the gap it would make the vaccine less effective overall after both doses 3 months apart? Or is the concern that after 3 weeks vaccinated folks might be wandering around thinking they have some immunity that will last till the 2nd dose at 3 months and they can't guarantee that?

Hi, this is something I’ve been really curious about myself. I had my first dose of Pfizer on the 18th Dec and was clearly told there is no immunity until around ten days after the second dose of the vaccine.

Unfortunately I was incubating covid when I had the first vaccine, and spent Christmas and new test in isolation. Work told me not to turn up for my booked appointment on the 9th jan, as they were rescheduling all vaccines to be given 12 weeks apart in line with government guidance, rather than three weeks.

Does this mean they have found out there is actually some immunity from just one dose of Pfizer, or are they just aiming to vaccinate as many as possible to make them look like they’re doing better?

I’m not a cynical person, genuinely just curious. Obviously for me its a case of stable door horse bolted but would be interested to know what others think.

there is immunity after the first dose but it is boosted by the second.
They are doing it to get more people some immunity from their first Jag. I had my second one which should have been next Monday cancelled. My 2 colleagues managed just to get their second on in before they were cancelled.

The excellent virologist Chris Smith said this morning that although the Pfizer vaccine hasn't been tested fully yet it's quite likely that spacing out the doses will lead to an increased level of protection. If anyone is able to make a prediction I'd say it was him.

I can't be certain but I think he said that there is already some evidence that this is the case for the AZ/Oxford one
