This is a joke

There has been a lot of talk of teachers having increased risk but my family members are in the police and fire service are constantly in and out of houses.

Think about it. My family member has Covid (asymptomatic) and your family member who is vulnerable calls for fire or police.

Well guess what, they are walking the virus into their house. Sorry but they are. All the months of the vulnerable being careful could be undone if an emergency service has Covid.

Doctors are prioritised, why can ambulance, fire and police also not be prioritised. They aren’t even on the list to be vaccinated. It’s ridiculous they have worked the ENTIRE way through the pandemic on the front line facing risk everyday for us and this is how we thank them.

Ambulance staff are also not included in prioritisation for vaccinations.

They are all forgotten about.

DH is a paramedic and had his vaccine this week, as have most of his colleagues. I can't speak for the other emergency services, but the ambulance service here is making it an urgent priority. I'm an NHS worker and my jab is next month. Postcode lottery I guess as usual.

youcanthandlethetruth · 10/01/2021 21:50

Well it definitely isn’t happening for police or fire service

Here’s an article about the Met to prove my point

youcanthandlethetruth · 10/01/2021 21:52

Chair of the Met Police Federation, Ken Marsh, said he was "amazed" that no consideration was being given to vaccinating police officers.

He said enforcing a national lockdown would put a lot of pressure on officers who are with the public 24/7.

The government said it was prioritising those who were at risk for the vaccine.

Mr Marsh said: "It would appear that policing has been airbrushed out of any conversation in relation to protecting my colleagues, which I find quite incredible considering they are on the front line," he said.

There was an article in my local newspaper where a man accidentally set fire to his bed by falling asleep while smoking. He lives with his grandparents, one of which was covid positive and they had to call the fire brigade to help put the fire out. He then became violent towards his grandparents, spraying his grandmother (who had covid and was unwell) in the face with deodorant! He was arrested - so both police, fire and ambulance had all been exposed. It's absolutely crazy!

Nubbin · 10/01/2021 21:56

Yes - DH - police mainly dealing with offenders in the community so going out checking that sex offenders on bail/remand aren't breaching their conditions etc. Not pleasant - lots of HMO and no real PPE. On a quiet shift - in CSU dealing with prisoners and all the spitting, urinating etc that entails - Stratford so 1 in 15 - we are counting the days until we all get it unless
he is offered a vaccine and in doing so hopefully protects us from his exposure (2
Grandparents living here + 75 with co morbidity health issues and and under 6
month old already v small).

Ruddyfedup · 10/01/2021 21:59

Officers in my force have masks, goggles, disposable aprons and gloves for situations were they are in peoples houses. We deal with as much stuff as we can over the phone, but if people keep calling, we cant stop policing. Granted, in an emergency they cant say 'can you hold on a mo so i can pop my apron on' but masks and gloves would be on anyway.

Nubbin · 10/01/2021 22:00

Every weekend shift is pretty much spent down a+e protecting the staff there from drunken idiots!

ParisJeTAime · 10/01/2021 22:03

Honestly, calling this government is a shambles, is instilling to shambleses! Yet another thing they are massively fucking up. Seeing them on the news with them all snorting about "this could be fatal"... YOU have fucked this up at every turn. The blood is on YOUR hands, you bunch of half cooked, overprivileged fuckwits.

ParisJeTAime · 10/01/2021 22:03

Ugh stupid autocorrect!

"Calling the government a shambles is insulting to shambleses"

youcanthandlethetruth · 10/01/2021 22:08

I just want people to read this and be aware. Seeing as there is no discussion in the media surrounding this and it doesn’t appear to be on the government agenda

You are right to start making people aware. Well doneSmile

I’m very disappointed. I clicked the thread for a cheery joke. False advertising.
Blowingagale · 10/01/2021 22:27

OP agree that police, paramedics and fire services on front line put themselves in danger of Covid. I don’t know how they should be prioritised compared to age groups,
over professions as I don’t know who is most at risk due to the way they interact - I know emergency services get assaulted by people they try to help so might be more at risk.

At the moment we do not have enough evidence to know whether fire officer being vaccinated will prevent spread to someone vulnerable as we don’t know whether they can get and transmit to others even though they won’t get ill. It might be true just not evidence yet one way or the other.

HibernatingTill2030 · 10/01/2021 22:42

Paramedics and other ambulance staff come under frontline NHS in my area. I'm not sure about police/fire service etc, so it may be dependent on area.

Onjnmoeiejducwoapy · 10/01/2021 22:49

Unfortunately vaccines are not a means of rewarding people on the frontline, nor are they given out to people with a high degree of chance of catching it, without a high degree of chance of ending up in hospital from it.

Vaccines are for:those very likely to need medical care, and health staff NOT because they’re in danger but because the health service will not be able to function with them off sick (because this will cause mass deaths). That’s it.

It’s awful but it’s the situation when the vaccine numbers are hugely limited. If you do the maths it makes sense—if you vaccinated all police officers it will make little difference to the health service. E.g. let’s say 10,000 police officers, of whom 2,000 get it, maybe 60 in hospital, 50 of whom would be on the list for a vaccine anyway due to underlying conditions (numbers made up BTW). Vs using those 20,000 vaccines on 10,000 highly vulnerable people and keeping literally hundreds out of hospital, savings loads of lives as health services continue to function.

That’s why it would be a terrible strategy for the county as a whole to prioritise young, healthy people over those who are vulnerable. It’s not a reward for being brave, nor a protection for an individual—it’s crisis medicine to keep hospitals functioning and give the ill a fighting chance.

HyacynthBucket · 10/01/2021 23:10

I ws amazed to read recently that dentists are not prioritised for the vaccine. I think they are heroic to keep going as they do.

Crumpetycrump · 10/01/2021 23:26

But dentists can wear full PPE - mine looked like a scuba diver! School staff in the other hand ...
