liver and blood sugar levels post covid - anyone raised?

OH Had Covid beginning of Dec and was hospitalised for a couple of day after 2 week as wasn't getting better. Had Iv anti biotics and fluids along with steroids and blood thinners to take at home for a week. Had a liver function test 2 weeks after leaving hospital (so 1 week after finishing drugs) and has been told his blood sugar are V high and that he needs liver scan as showing some issues (not sure what)
I heard somewhere that steroids can increase blood sugar and that post covid liver issues can occur, he still very tired. Has anyone else experienced this

Is it possible that his blood sugar was high before he caught Covid? Did they confirm they tested it before they treated him with steroids and it was normal?
Considering that diabetes (and presumably pre diabetes/metabolic disorder) makes people vulnerable, it would tie in with why his Covid was a severe case.

There is a blood test to track 3 months' blood sugar levels which would be from pre-Covid.

kingkuta · 10/01/2021 20:53

Maybe pre-existing issues pre covid?

evilkitten · 10/01/2021 20:54

Was the blood test the HbA1C or a fingerprick blood sugar test? If HbA1C, then it's a (weighted) three month average of the blood sugar level.

There has been some speculation that covid can trigger T2 diabetes ... haven't looked recently to see if it's backed up with credible research yet.

Covid is a weird nasty virus. Not your oh's issues but I was left with the very high blood pressure and other weird and wonderful health problems.

Almost everyone has significantly reduced their activity levels since march, and not reduced their eating, sadly both things strongly increase their chances of metabolic disorder?

He was at his fittest before he caught covid - mid 50s but exercised was not over weight and ate healthily, the odd treat but mainly freshly cooked food as he has family history of high cholesterol so try to control this with diet to avoid having to go on meds. I would say he was eating healthier and exercising more in lockdown as he didn't have to go out and entertain clients as much which would have generally involved eating and drinking more. It was a HbA1c test he had one a few months pre covid at a pharmacy but wouldn't have had one at the Gp for a couple of years and last time it was ok. A few years ago it was pre diabetes but got it under control with diet and exercise (again he wasn't over weight then either) I guess we'll wait to see what liver scan says and he has to have another CT scan on chest in February at respiratory clinic

Yes, I had suspected Covid back in March, it presented as a gastro infection initially before I developed symptoms of chest pain and breathlessness etc . I’ve gone on to develop Long Covid and have had blood tests carried out by my gp since May, My LFT was shown as raised in sentenced then in late November I developed symptoms of pancreatitis and was admitted to hospital for a couple of days where my LFT still showed as raised however a follow up scan a couple of weeks later showed a normal gallbladder . My gp is repeating the blood tests but both consultant and gp suggested this could be covid related

Spacecadetagain · 10/01/2021 23:30

Raised in blood tests I mean !

time4anothername · 10/01/2021 23:48

There have been cases of diabetes onset after Covid unfortunately, it's being studied, so he should ask his GP if that might be suspected from the high blood sugar

Porcupineintherough · 11/01/2021 00:38

My friend has beome prediabetic (type 2) following COVID last April. She controls it with diet.

RememberSelfCompassion · 11/01/2021 01:07

Wow. I had some strange reuslts back from thriva I need to forward to the doctor. I think I had covid in March (not tested then so dont know) so I wonder if this is the link. I do have other risk factors though so could be coincidence.

Steroids increase blood sugars so hopefully they'll go back to normal in a few weeks.

Quite a lot of medications (antibiotics etc) can affect liver enzymes and so can viruses, if it is one of those causes they will probably normalise soon too.
