To be very worried about return to uni?

I’m a student, studying entirely online due to covid (and my own health reasons) . I’ve been off since before covid on sick leave but due to return on Tuesday .

Uni have left a lot of things to the last minute but have suggested I might need to go on clinical placement very soon . Haven’t said much about it except to say they’d try to transfer it to nearest local authority if they could .

(not nursing or medicine)

We live in the arse end of nowhere and I’m a non driver so would need public transport - and shitting it .

I am clinically vulnerable, also main carer to vulnerable parent and ECV grandparent .

Uni have just said there’s nothing to worry about, they won’t put me at any risk, but I will need to do the placement .

At the moment we aren’t socialising at all, I’ve not seen a friend in well over eighteen months .

We do ALL shopping online, only walk in immediate neighbourhood at quiet times . Avoid takeaways etc . Only go to pharmacy once a month if possible .

It doesn’t help that I have OCD and am trying very hard to manage contamination based fears .

I don’t want to go into a placement, catch this virus and kill my family .

Have I a right to point blank refuse on health/care grounds, or would that be wrong?

Will you be able to complete your course without it?!

There is no right to refuse a compulsory placement and in the vast majority of places the university wouldn't be able to award the degree if it hadn't been undertaken. If you are uncomfortable you should be able to defer your studies or drop out of the programme (and potentially move to another course that doesn't have similar requirements).

No, although I’m only halfway through, so plenty of time to defer the placement if they agreed .

I'm a midwifery student and one of my cohort has deferred for a year as she doesn't want to be out on placement at the moment. Is this an option for you?

No, I’m just coming back from time off unfortunately .

I sound like I’m being very ‘entitled’, I’m just really frightened ... watched a news report with doctor saying patients very distressed grabbing at him desperate for breath and I don’t want to cause that for any of my family .
