What are your thoughts about the future of travel? Feels a bit depressing to me! What do you think you will do?

I knew I'd be out of it for a bit with a new baby but now starting to feel the pangs of never going away, no abroad experience to plan for. Especially with brexit, it makes me feel really sad.

@SendMeHome

I’m gutted. Brexit feels awful too, only spending 90 days in every 180 in Europe sounds horrendous. I’d move, but I don’t think the in-laws would consider coming and they’d hate me for encouraging my husband to go.

I don’t think I’d mind so much if we’d been able to conceive, but I’ve just had another BFN... i feel like I can’t have what everyone else seems to have, and I can’t escape from it; either.

I'm sorry, @SendMeHome.

We love to travel as a family,tend to just go to places for our birthdays as opposed to doing presents now. We did a big Interail trip round Northern Europe and took the kids to Disneyland Paris then went to Lisbon for a few days in SEPT 2019. 2020 was meant to be Florida,New York for our wedding then a 2 weeks roadtrip honeymoon around the Southern States. But we had to cancel as I found out I was pregnant and had the baby in May 2020. Either way,we wouldn't have got to do any of the above last year! We still managed to get away to Longleat in March just before lockdown and Yorkshire in the summer hols.

This year,I'm looking for somewhere for us to get married that's not in the UK. Berlin or Seville would be out first choice as they're quite meaningful to us but are out because of red tape. Can't afford the USA now and want to wait until the while Trump thing dies down so looks like we'll be getting married and holidaying in Scotland!

I've diverted a bit,sorry. I do have a friend who is from France but travels a shit load. Basically he'll just get in a car and drive to different countries in Europe whenever he can. If it's any consolation,this year he's been from France to Spain to Italy to Switzerland to the UK (although he did get stuck here as he flew in just before Christmas!) once lockdown in France was lifted. So he's traveling pretty much as normal.

We'll get back there,it will just take time xx

I used to do a few European trips and visiting north Spain to visit my family and a big trip. I think it’ll be big trip and Spain for a while now whilst countries still have restrictions

User158340 · 10/01/2021 17:40

We need less travel in the future anyway with climate change.

DBML · 10/01/2021 18:00

@Funkypolar

There are alternative cars and boilers available or that will become available, for instance the gradual transition to electric vehicles.
There is not a feasible alternative to air travel.

@User158340

If you want to remain in the UK and avoid air travel for environmental reasons, then that’s your prerogative. However, travel (particularly in very hot sunny climates) is a huge part of my life and a life without travel would be joyless. So, I will be resuming my trips abroad just as soon as I get the chance to.

You can reach most of Europe by train and thanks to France’s high-speed TGV, getting to the Mediterranean is much faster than you’d think. There are also sleeper trains, although sadly not as many as there used to be. This website is great.

Cattenberg

That’s fine for Europe, but for people like myself who haven’t been to Europe since 2005 and spend a large proportion of our time in the Americas; Bahamas and Maldives, there aren’t many train alternatives. It’s flying or flying and I’m willing to fly.
If prices go up, I’m still willing to fly.

I love travelling, I had two trips cancelled, one a holiday to Spain and the other to play rugby at the Bingham cup in Ottawa.

We do have a trip booked for August, our insurance does cover covid so we will be okay if its cancelled. Our campervan arrived last week, so we’re looking forward to being able to use it properly.

Sad Flowers

I agree with posters saying I don't actually like the idea of travelling in current climate, more of what it was like before.

I think the short-term the days of mass, cheap travel are over. It’ll continue but be more expensive and probably more of a luxury than previously.
