When do you think we will be able to go on holiday?

This post is basically me dreaming.

DP & I are both NHS HCPs currently working on covid wards in separate cities. DP has had the 1st dose. I am yet to be vaccinated.

We are finally getting married (having postponed from last summer) in a very small microwedding this summer after having been together almost 10 years and engaged/making wedding and honeymoon plans for about 4 years. While our plans have totally changed, we didn't want to keep waiting to see how covid pans out (as also conscious of body clock and want to start a family).

Realistically when do you think we can go on a honeymoon abroad? We don't do holidays abroad often (even before covid) so were always planning on a big splurging experience for honeymoon. Perhaps one of the Caribbean islands or Indian ocean islands etc - a beachy holiday on an island far away.

When do you think this can realistically happen?

Book it, just make sure you can change it and use a reputable company.

IcedPurple · 10/01/2021 13:25
@IcedPurple we should t have been going on holiday in a middle of a global pandemic back in the summer. We shouldn't have left our borders open for anyone to come in.
We should have locked down in September or earlier. But no let's go in holiday from Britain - chance of picking up Covid at an airport - share it around - bring back through the airport and quarantine?? Oh no just get a taxi home and maybe have a little look in Sainsburys on the way home...tough everything...don't wear a mask...touch everything ...trolleys...hair...oh big bag of crisps...
I think you need a holiday.

Ha I’m no Hancock fan but the vaccines are happening. They’ve done all the care homes and almost all the over 80s in my city which is a miracle but true. I’d be amazed if all top 4 groups were done by end feb but def by Easter so yes I’m weirdly hopeful on this one

Poppingnostopping · 10/01/2021 13:36

I know quite a few people who travelled to Europe this summer, Greece, Tenerife, Tunisia, as well as going home to see family, not everyone, and some didn't make it. What I noticed about those still holidaying is they just went at the last minute, depending what was available/what air corridors were open. Booking advance is going to be risky I think til summer next year, but if you are prepared to go to different/flexible locations, the opportunity to travel isn't dead, celebs are still going abroad now!

ArialAnna · 10/01/2021 13:38

I am thinking of possibly just booking flights - no accomodation/finer details as that can always be sorted later and accept that I am gambling with £1000-£1500. Although I do think most airlines are offering free postponement etc if gov guidelines change.

Be weary of these offers from airlines! In theory Easyjet said we could move our March ski flights at no extra cost. The reality was we would have only got the CURRENT value of the flights off another fare, and as the flights were effectively worthless (as no one was allowed to travel because of lockdown) we'd only have got £40 off another flight, and lost the remaining £150 we spent. We are trying to claim on travel insurance instead, but are still waiting to hear if our claim has been accepted.

If you want to book something, an ATOL protected package holiday would be a much safer choice.

LimeTreeGrove · 10/01/2021 13:39

Only read your op but id say this country this summer. Abroad next summer. I went away this summer to the same region of the country I live in as the rates were very low at the time

Fragileandcomposed · 10/01/2021 13:39

shallbe I’m already there. I don’t understand why everyone else isn’t there too tbh b

You could go on holiday tomorrow if you wanted to! As evidenced by the massive numbers of celebrities currently abroad!

MsTSwift · 10/01/2021 13:45

You don’t need to go so far for what you want. We managed Venice (by car) last summer and a week in a deserted resort 2 hours away from Venice on the lagoon with crystal clear waters and lovely beaches. I can’t see how going further afield could have been any better and we honeymooned in Bali and have been to African beach resorts and California.

They go for "work". That's how they get away with it. Going to five star hotels in The Maldives and posting about it on IG slips through as work - ie advertising and promoting etc. Infuriatingly.
Unsure33 · 10/01/2021 13:54

It might depend if the countries you want to go to can afford to vaccinate their population as well .

So if they can and you are vaccinated as well then it could be possible .

So I would keep an eye on foreign vaccination programmes as well .

Unsure33 · 10/01/2021 13:56

Want about a package holiday with a villa , then you can self cater if necessary .

Jet 2 were amazing at refunding our anniversary holiday that was booked for this year.

Megan2018 · 10/01/2021 14:16

Honestly @Siw2020
It’s not happening for you in 2021, so it’s either write it off and start a family or delay TTC.
By all means book something but it’s really unlikely. It depends if cancelling is worse than not booking.
You could book last minute if things change but I really think it won’t.

WhyDoesItAlwaysRainMe · 10/01/2021 14:18

I think there will be windows starting May throughout summer I think it will be the tier system again.

I really want to book Greece for May but I'm going to wait and see how it goes

Weallfloatdownhere · 10/01/2021 14:24

I’m hopeful for Europe later on in the year, ideally summer. It’s a very good point other posters made about the vaccination programs for the places people want to go to. I’m just gonna wait and see. I spend a huge amount of time and stress dealing with cancelled holidays last year, so this year I’m just going to wait and see and not book anything far in advance. Am hopeful though!

Funkypolar · 10/01/2021 14:52

What about quarantine either end?

Weallfloatdownhere · 10/01/2021 15:13

Yeah I would not go anywhere where you have to quarantine on arrival, but there were lots of places last summer where that wasn’t a requirement. I wfh so quarantining on return isn’t a problem. Did that in October in fact. It was boring but manageable.

Katie517 · 10/01/2021 15:18

By this summer all you have to think is people were going away last summer before vaccines so this summer will be better. The travel industry won’t survive without this summer either in the uk or Europe so it will happen. I also don’t think a vaccine will be a requirement to travel but negative test prob will be depending on the destination.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 10/01/2021 15:24

@Fragileandcomposed

Years. Five years. More probably. If ever.
Well aren’t you a ray of sunshine?? I think that’s bollocks, if you want a holiday this summer they’ll be available, same as last year.
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/01/2021 16:06

We've made sure we've booked places with decent kitchens and lovely views and/or a garden. That way we can go if allowed but make the choice whether we go out.

Villanelle17 · 10/01/2021 16:34
@Fragileandcomposed 5 years, catastrophising much?! A perfect example of the absolute nuttiness on mumsnet sometimes.
I agree. I read that like Hmm

Forgetmenot157 · 10/01/2021 17:35

I think carribbean in the autumn or winter should be fine.. At most if they have not vaccinated by then it may be a case of no excursions and just stay on resort.

Tourism is so big in the carribbean they will open up as soon as they possibly can!

EasterIssland · 10/01/2021 17:42

We tend to do a few trips around the year and a big trip in summer. I’ll knock down the small trips and spend more in the big one by booking it kind of last minute when it’s clear where we can go. My plan is Iceland so hoping it can happen but if not then The places to go to list is too big
