What would happen if you had the vaccine but were actually positive when you had it?

So if you were positive but didn't know - asymptomatic obviously and you went and got your vaccine....would you still get immunity? Would it not work? Would it matter? (Bar potentially spreading it of course!)

If one third of people who are infected are asymptomatic and millions of people around the world have been vaccinated, it must already have happened many times. I don't think it matters.

Mindymomo · 09/01/2021 19:46

They say vaccine takes 14-21 days to work, so don’t think it would help if you already have covid but presume it would still proect you in the future.

weepingwillow22 · 09/01/2021 20:10

I don't think it would be as effective as you would not mount a strong immune response to it when you are positive. On another thread a healthcare worker said she was told to wait 4 weeks after her positive test before being vaccinated.

Ch3rish · 09/01/2021 20:14

There's been quite a number of instances of this happening already, it's bound to. Nothing happens, it's just as if you hadn't had the vaccination.

I don’t know but my parents had the vaccine abs within a week they both tested positive

Mindymomo · 10/01/2021 07:30

@Kenworthington. I saw in from another poster that her DM had not left her house since March and took a bus to get vaccinated, then tested positive 2 days later. I am sorry for your parents, how are they doing?

yearnewwhatever · 10/01/2021 12:08

Thanks all.

I'm due to have my vaccine on Tuesday but DD is isolating from a contact at school. Just got me thinking, what if he is actually asymptomatic positive, or I am and I get it done without knowing - would it be less effective or be pointless etc.

Just my mind wandering. I was lucky to get the slot so I really want it to be the best outcome it can be.

@Mindymomo my dad who has late stage dementia is totally fine but my mum who also has dementia but also diabetes and heart problems is very very poorly.

this has just happened to my sister. she had vaccine on Friday. felt ill saturday so had a test and it was positive! so she must have been positive on the Friday or before surely? they told her you can’t get actual covid from the vaccine so it can’t be a false result from that? i am actually quite confused by the timeline but assume she must have been positive before the injection?

MrsAudreyShapiro · 10/01/2021 15:07

I would think so @Allywill
They say the time between exposure to the virus and the start of symptoms is typically 3-10 days. If she fell ill on Saturday, she picked it up on Wednesday or earlier. So yes, she would have had the virus before the injection.

It happens with the flu vaccine too.
