Wouldn't a "standby" vaccine list be a great idea?

DH and I were talking about this earlier. We're both in our later 40s so not in the priority group to get the vaccine.

However, we're also both able to drive, and working at home. As the vaccine gets rolled out, there are inevitably going to be missed appointments, and space vaccine "left over" at the end of a shift in a GP surgery or vaccination station.

So wouldn't it be an amazing idea to have a standby list of people who are prepared to drop everything and go within a certain radius immediately?

Phone rings at 7.30pm - Hello Mrs Raspberry, we have spare vaccine at the High Street surgery, it's yours if you can get here in the next 20 minutes?

I'd certainly be up for that. Certainly it's what's been happening with the Pfizer given the storage issues, they've been giving spare doses to hospital staff. But once they're all vaccinated, open it up to the public?

I’m volunteering in a vaccine centre. I promise you that no vaccine is wasted. As others have said, we still haven’t vaccinated all the frontline health and social care workers yet so they are on standby to come down and receive any leftovers.

NotPennysBoat · 08/01/2021 22:40

The community centre on my road has opened as a vaccine centre, and I was pondering today that they should do a 'door knock' on the street if there's any left over!

Do the volunteers get a chance for a vaccine if there are any leftover/no shows etc?
ChocOrange1 · 08/01/2021 22:56

Some nhs trusts are doing this. My husband works for the NHS but far from frontline. He is on a list to get called up for a vaccine if there are spares st the end of a day.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 08/01/2021 23:00

Someone I know who is CEV got one today through this. Lives next door to the doctors and they had one with a time limit of 10 mins left so gave it her. Great idea.

@ProudAuntie76

Vaccines are NOT getting wasted. That’s just not happening. I can’t believe people think that’s a “thing” - leftovers go to staff or patients in for other issues.
Yes, but once the staff are done, for instance in a GP surgery that is giving out vaccinations, this might be the case if there are no shows? From what I gathered they will have very limited patients in for anything else in the weeks that are assigned to giving jabs.
movingonup20 · 08/01/2021 23:03

They are already doing this but with older people's carers eg daughter drives them to the vaccine appointment

CatherineCawood · 08/01/2021 23:05

I said just this the other day. Why not have a list of spare people who can be there in 20 mins at the drop of a hat. I would go on the list. I'm 47 and doubt I'll get it before Sept.

ProudAuntie76 · 08/01/2021 23:06

The way it’s worked so far in the GP settings locally is that they have a standby list of people that can get to the surgery very quickly, usually registered elderly patients on the same street. I’ve also seen spouses and family carers of those invited be offered the jab.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 08/01/2021 23:06

Read the thread...... They are doing it!!!

TitsOot4Xmas · 08/01/2021 23:07

Already doing it. We get staff to fill the gaps when people don’t turn up for their appts.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/01/2021 23:08

@RaspberryCoulis

Obviously people on the priority lists should get it first.

But if it's a choice between giving it to a random punter or chucking it in the bin, the random punter should get it.

Yes I agree with this. The more people we vaccinate the better.
PrimalLass · 08/01/2021 23:09

@Daisy829

Yes I read they are doing this in Israel. People queue up in the day & any left over vaccines are administered. Great idea.
I read that Israel now face supply problems as they relied on getting more and might not.
LemonTT · 08/01/2021 23:10

There are lots of ways this is done. Reserve lists, usually health and social care who are able to come in at short notice. The other option is to offer to accompanying spouses who are in priority cohort, like a 79 year old wife.

There actually isn’t much waste as dna rates are low. But the 6th dose variable can allow for more people to be done. That and the ever fluctuating levels of supply.

Athinginitself · 08/01/2021 23:11

I dont think there are any vaccinations going in the bin, my gp friend who was vaccinating all day last week was hoping to get his when there were some left over, theres also still the majority of nhs staff to do, priority lists of CEV nhs staff have been sent to the local hub. Once oxford is being used it will be less of an issue anyway.

TitsOot4Xmas · 09/01/2021 09:44

My Trust hasn’t wasted a single vaccine. The management around delivering it is Herculean because of all the logistical issues with it.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 09/01/2021 09:47

Definitely. My healthcare worker sis got hers a little earlier as there was a no show and the vaccine was literally minutes away from becoming unusable. They should be taking all possible steps to avoid wastage.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 09/01/2021 09:48

I think that if a standby list were used, it should be ideally follow the vaccine priority list.

And in the unlikely event there were spare doses (after all vaccinators and nearby NHS staff done) then I'd offer it to the emergency services. They're pretty damned good at getting anywhere within minutes and should be one of the occupational priorities

Splodgetastic · 09/01/2021 09:49

I think this is why the Israeli vaccine programme has been a success - all left over vaccine has been given to younger people.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 09/01/2021 10:19

I started this a few days ago www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4126175-Vaccine-standby-list so yes I agree with you.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 09/01/2021 11:09

Have you not read the thread? The vaccines are ALL being used

InTheSnow · 09/01/2021 11:23

Phyz · 09/01/2021 13:45

If there is a stand by list it should not be of healthy young people who want to jump the queue.
It should be those on the priority list. Must be plenty like me who are CEV and shielding but are perfectly able to hop in the car and get to the doctors in 5 minutes.

lovelemoncurd · 09/01/2021 13:47

Yes and maybe in 6 months you might be asked. However my 65 year old brother still runs up mountains and drives and doesn't have dependents to sort so I think he would be able to get there pretty quickly too!

TitsOot4Xmas · 09/01/2021 16:07

That will not work for all the vaccines though.
